“Through my watercolor painting I try to convey to the viewer an impression of my love for the subjects of my paintings. My best compliment is when someone tells me my paintings are happy!”
Martha Elchert began painting as a grade schooler in Ohio. As an oil painter she majored in Art at Heidelberg College in Ohio. She later studied watercolor at San Juan College in New Mexico and Snow College in Utah.
In the Gateway to Imagination 2014, a national juried show, she won Honorable Mention and the Purchase Award placing her watercolor ‘Old Barn’ in the permanent collection of the Gateway Museum in Farmington, NM.
Her work has been accepted and received awards in juried shows in New Mexico, Minnesota and Michigan. Martha Elchert attained signature member status in the New Mexico Watercolor Society in 2017.
Martha paints both in studio and en Plein Air although she is happiest when painting outdoors. She has received awards at Paint Dexter, Clinton County, and Northport Plein Air events. In 2021 she won the Glen Arbor Quick Draw.
In 2019 Elchert received the Michigan DNR Centennial award at the Great Lakes Plein Air Painter’s Association’s “Paint the Parks” show, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Michigan State Parks. She also received an Honorable Mention award during the show at the Michigan History Center in Lansing.
Martha Elchert’s watercolors are held in the permanent collections of Gateway Museum, Farmington, NM, Fairview Ridges Hospital and the Visitors Bureau in Burnsville, MN, The Old Art Building in Leland, MI as well as private collections throughout the United States.
Martha enjoys membership in the Michigan Watercolor Society, Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association (board member), Northwest Michigan Plein Air Painters, Glen Arbor Arts Center, Northport Art Association, The Old Art Building and is a Signature Member of New Mexico Watercolor Society.
