Light, shadows and reflections combine to create a visual impression of a particular place and time in my mind. I begin with photos and memories and add value, texture and shades of color to infuse my paintings with light. I also enjoy painting en Plein Air, outside, in the moment. Seeing the immediacy of colors and shadows inspires me!
After graduating from Chelsea Public Schools, I completed a degree in art education with an English minor from EMU. I taught Middle School English in Chelsea, and I am able in retirement to paint on a daily basis! My media has varied, sketching with pencil, pen and ink, washes, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, oils and more recently, pastels. For many years I did watercolor portraits of homes, but now I prefer the variety
of still life, landscapes, pastel portraits, pet portraits, interiors, gardens and porches. Most of my commissions come from friends, acquaintances, and referrals, and I'm flexible about the choice of media suiting the subject matter. I appreciate and am inspired by the painters I've met in the Chelsea Artists Guild, Saline Artists Guild, the Huron River Art Collective, the Ann Arbor Pastelists, the Great Lakes Pastel Painters, and the Great Lakes Plein Air Painters. I'm inspired by what I see on a daily basis. I think I will never run out of subject matter for paintings. The world is truly a miraculous place, and we are blessed to be here. With lots of practice, my technique improves each day.
