Join JQ, Correlate JOC, & The Lunar Collective for an evening of celebration and community as we come together to observe Shabbat and Sukkot, centering the voices and experiences of Queer Jews of Color, Mizrahi, and Sephardic Jews. We will also explore themes of belonging, ancestry, and connection by weaving together Authentic Relating (AR) with song and ritual. Sponsored by NuRoots and the Jews of Color Initiative.
*This event is open to all self identifying Jews of Color (both LGBTQ+ & allies)
Whether you’re a longtime community member or joining for the first time, all are welcome to celebrate with us. Come as you are and help us create a vibrant evening of unity and gratitude!
Leading our programming themed on belonging and ancestry will be:
Sophia Morgan (she/they) is a Chinese-Ashkenazi Jew, Authentic Relating facilitator, dancer, and passionate advocate for belonging and intersectionality. Sophia founded Correlate JOC (https://www.letscorrelate.org/projects/correlate-joc) to equip the Los Angeles Jews of Color community with tools for embodied connection and belonging.
Rachel Chang (she/her) is a Jewish musician, songleader, and educator, as well as a music therapist, living on Lenni Lenape land in Philadelphia, PA. As The LUNAR Collective (https://www.weareasianjews.org/)’s Ritual Director and director of A Queer Nigun Project, which uses nigunim as a collective healing practice for LGBTQIA+ people, for Jews of Color, and for incarcerated people in Jewish community, Rachel leads with expressive guitar, sensitive listening, and a deep intention to cultivate belonging.
We’re proud to officially expand our Persian Pride programming into (Q)JOCSM (Queer (or allied) Jews of Color, Sephardic, and Mizrahi). According to the Jews of Color Initiative’s study, Beyond the Count, the term "Jews of Color" encompasses diverse identities, including racial groupings, national heritage, and regional connections. We recognize that our previous programming focused solely on Persian identity, and we are so excited to broaden our scope to include Queer (and allies) Sephardic, Mizrahi, and other Jews of Color.
