2023 JQSA Queer & Ally Retreat

Join us for JQ's annual day-long retreat with fellow LGBTQ+ and ally teens in LA! Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Exposition Park.

When: Saturday, May 13, 2023, 2pm - 8:15pm

Where: Exposition Park Area (Exact location sent upon registration)

Who: Open to all teens grades 7 - 12. 

What: This day will consist of:

  • Meeting new friends and breaking the ice with the Bible Players improv group.
  • Exploring the amazing Museums in Exposition Park. We'll Immerse ourselves in the wonders of science and nature, and marvel at the fascinating exhibits.
  • Taking in the serene Rose Garden and capturing the memories we'll make with a thrilling guided queer photography class and photoshoot.
  • And let's not forget about the food! We'll enjoy an awesome family-style dinner nearby and bond with all our new friends.
  • BONUS: All teens who join will have the opportunity to march with JQ in the Annual Pride Parade on June 4th. Don't miss out!

Safety and Security Information: Your safety is our top priority on this trip. We have taken every measure possible to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. There will be three chaperones accompanying us throughout the day, and a security guard who will be visibly armed and in a security outfit. The security team will travel on foot with us, and we will be in USC's patrolled security area. In addition, the California Science Center has its own security with live CCTV. We have also informed SCI of our trip, and all guests that register for the event are vetted by CSI. Please note that exact information regarding timing and location is not shared until the day before the event to mitigate risk. Rest assured that we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure your safety, and we hope that you will join us for this exciting trip.

Communicable Disease Waiver

I acknowledge and agree to the following:
I am aware of the risk to my physical appearance at the venue and my participation in the activity of this event that may cause injury or illness that may lead to paralysis or death. I have not experienced symptoms that of fever, fatigue, difficulty in breathing, dry cough, or exhibiting any other symptoms relating to any communicable disease within the last 14 days. I have not been, nor any member(s) of my household, diagnosed to be infected with any communicable virus within the last 30 days.

Following the pronouncements above, I declare the following: I am fully and personally responsible for my safety and actions while and during participation, and I recognize that I may be, in any case, at risk of contracting a communicable virus. With full knowledge of the risks involved, I release, waive, and discharge JQ International from any liabilities, claims, demands, actions, and causes of action whatsoever, directly or indirectly arising out of or related to any loss, damage, injury, or death, that may be sustained while participating in any activity while in, on, or around the premises or while using the facilities that may lead to unintentional exposure or harm due to a communicable virus. I agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless JQ International from and against any costs, expenses, damages, lawsuits, and/or liabilities or claims arising whether directly or indirectly from or related to any claims made by or against any of the released party due to injury, loss, or death from or related to any communicable virus.

Code of Conduct Terms

Safety. Respect. Equity.

These are the values and principles that we are committed to as an organization and as we convene in-person and virtually for community programming, education, and support services. The following is an outline of the policies and norms that are part of JQ International’s culture. We value each and every individual who joins our community and we look forward to learning, supporting, and celebrating together with these norms in place. Thank you for helping create safe, respectful, and equitable spaces. 

Jewish tradition recognizes that every person is created in the divine image and should be treated as such. Furthermore the Jewish values of repairing the world, mutual responsibility, and not standing idly by while others are being harmed are fundamental to the creation, implementation, and upholding of this Code of Conduct. 

JQ International is committed to creating a harassment-free environment for all participants in our programs, including, staff, speakers, vendors, and volunteers. Harassment as outlined below is considered by JQ International to be a serious form of misconduct. 

This Code of Conduct is established in order to promote safety and respect in all of our activities. We expect all participants at JQ International activities to abide by this policy in all venues, including ancillary events and unofficial social gatherings: 

  • Exercise consideration and respect in your speech and actions 

  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech 

  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants 

  • Alert leadership if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this policy, even if they seem minor (see more details below) 

The following behaviors do not belong at JQ International 

  • Harassment that discriminates against a specific group of people based on age, race, sex, ethnicity, national origin, religion, language, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, health conditions, socioeconomic status, marital status, domestic status, and/or parental status (hereafter, simply referred to as “harassment”) 

  • Sexual harassment of any kind, including unwelcome sexual attention and inappropriate physical or verbal contact 

  • Abuse of power (including abuses related to position, wealth, race or gender) 

  • Yelling at, threatening, or bullying speakers, staff, or attendees 

  • Any significantly disruptive conduct 

  • Repeated interruption of a speaker or performance 

  • Actual, threatened, or implied retaliation against a person for complaining about a violation of these policies or for cooperating with an investigation into a complaint

  1. All breaches should be reported to [email protected] as soon as possible.

EMERGENCY LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT

My teen is physically and emotionally fit enough to participate in the Program. In case of emergency, I hereby give permission to JQ International and medical personnel to provide my child with urgent or emergency health care; to administer anesthesia and medications; to order X-rays, tests, and provide treatment including surgical treatment; to release any records necessary for insurance purposes; and to provide or arrange necessary related transportation for my child. In the event I cannot be reached in an emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician to secure and administer treatment, including hospitalization, for the person named above. I understand that every effort will be made to contact me. I further understand that if I do not have medical insurance that covers all costs, I will be responsible for such medical costs.

In consideration of being permitted to participate in the above-referenced Teen JQSA (the “Program”), the undersigned Teen and the undersigned Teen’s parent or legal guardian on behalf of Teen and for himself or herself or themself and on behalf of all of Teen’s parents, legal guardians, representatives, heirs, and next of kin, hereby agrees to the following:

  1. THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY RELEASES, WAIVES, DISCHARGES AND COVENANTS NOT TO SUE JQ INTERNATIONAL, its officers, employees, directors, advisors, contractors, consultants, and agents (hereinafter referred to as “releases”) from all liability to the undersigned, the undersigned’s personal representatives, assigns, heirs, and next of kin for any loss or damage, and any claim or demands therefore on account of injury to the person or property or resulting in death of the undersigned, while the undersigned participates in the Program, waiving liability from any and all claims including the negligence of JQ International, its related organization, its officers, employees, and agents, resulting in personal injury, accidents or illnesses (including death), and property loss arising from, but not limited to the activities and attendance at JQ International Events events and programs.

  2. THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY AGREES TO INDEMNIFY AND SAVE AND HOLD HARMLESS the releases and each of them from any loss, liability, damage or cost they may incur due to the participation of the undersigned in the Program.

  3. THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE while participating in the Program.

  4. THE UNDERSIGNED IS AWARE THAT PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM MAY PRESENT A RISK OF PHYSICAL HARM. The undersigned is also aware that an injury may result while participating in said Program. The undersigned is aware of the risks and hereby acknowledges that he/she knowingly and voluntarily assumes any and all risks of bodily injury that may be incurred in connection with the Program.

  5. THE UNDERSIGNED further expressly agrees that the foregoing RELEASE, WAIVER AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by the law of the State of California and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.

EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED HAS READ AND VOLUNTARILY SIGNS THE RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, and further agrees that no oral representatives, statements or inducements apart from the foregoing written agreement have been made.
