The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is offering Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Change Program starting soon.
Q: What is the Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Change Program and what is the goal of the course?
The Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Change Program is a year long course that targets individuals at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. The first 6 months of the program, participants will meet once every week to learn core curriculum to build healthy habits. These classes will be an hour long and held every Saturday at 10 a.m.
The last six months, participants will meet the first Saturday of every month (at 10a.m.) to reinforce the key principles, taught months prior, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Through this program, participants are paired with a Lifestyle Coach to encourage healthy adjustments to diet, adding more physical activity into everyday routines, and creating life long habits to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Key components of the program include:
*CDC-approved curriculum with lessons, handouts, and other resources to help you make healthy changes.
*A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging.
*A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles. In some programs, the participants stay in touch with each other during the week. It may be easier to make changes when you’re working as a group than doing it on your own.
