Diane Ludlum Diane Virginia Ludlum (nee Moormann) of Somerset, KY., passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April 11, 2021. Diane grew up in Hyde Park and graduated from Withrow High School in 1970, where she met, and soon after married the love of her life, Huston ‘Buzz’ Ludlum. Married 49 years, together they raised two daughters, Holly and Brandyn. Diane left three grandsons: Andrew, Collin and Braden (Masternak). Diane loved swimming, boating and travel. She traveled alot with her husband throughout the mid-west, California, Texas, Florida and Virginia. She was very fond of her travels to England and Scotland with Scotland being her favorite. I lost my dad to this terrible disease on September 19 after a 4 year battle. He was diagnosed in September 2015 after suffering from what was thought to be multiple cases of pneumonia. Finally going to a specialist & being told he has pulmonary fibrosis, we didn’t know what that meant or what the next steps were? As a family, we began to do our own research & started learning that it is a diagnosis that would change our lives forever. After seeing a Pulmonologist that told us what you read on the internet, is in fact the definition of this disease. We began to learn that the pulmonary fibrosis would lead to a much bigger problem, Pulmonary Hypertension. With both of these diseases, my dad didn’t have a fighting chance. Although he fought like hell, it would eventually be much more than his body could handle. My dad leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Freda Barnes, 3 adult children & spouses, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson & 1 great-granddaughter on the way. He is a USMC Vietnam Veteran that served his Country honorably from 1964-1968. My mission in starting this memorial tribute page in my dad’s honor is so that we can hopefully continue to raise money & awareness for Pulmonary Fibrosis/Pulmonary Hypertension. If doctors can save 1 life from this nasty disease because more research is being done, then I know I’ve made my dad proud! Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in your lungs and the right side of your heart. In one form of pulmonary hypertension, tiny arteries in your lungs, called pulmonary arterioles, and capillaries become narrowed, blocked or destroyed. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your lungs, and raises pressure within your lungs' arteries. As the pressure builds, your heart's lower right chamber (right ventricle) must work harder to pump blood through your lungs, eventually causing your heart muscle to weaken and fail. With pulmonary hypertension, the rise in blood pressure is caused by changes in the cells that line your pulmonary arteries. These changes can cause the walls of the arteries to become stiff and thick, and extra tissue may form. The blood vessels may also become inflamed and tight. These changes in the pulmonary arteries can reduce or block blood flow through the blood vessels. This makes it harder for blood to flow, raising the blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. Pulmonary fibrosisis a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, you become progressively more short of breath. Pulmonary fibrosis scars and thickens the tissue around and between the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs. This makes it more difficult for oxygen to pass into your bloodstream. The damage can be caused by many different factors — including long-term exposure to certain toxins, certain medical conditions, radiation therapy and some medications. Long-term exposure to a number of toxins and pollutants can damage your lungs. The lung scarring that occurs in pulmonary fibrosis can't be reversed, and no current treatment has proved effective in stopping progression of the disease. Some treatments may improve symptoms temporarily or slow the disease's progression. Others may help improve quality of life. High blood pressure in your lungs (pulmonary hypertension).Unlike systemic high blood pressure, this condition affects only the arteries in your lungs. It begins when the smallest arteries and capillaries are compressed by scar tissue, causing increased resistance to blood flow in your lungs. This in turn raises pressure within the pulmonary arteries and the lower right heart chamber (right ventricle). Some forms of pulmonary hypertension are serious illnesses that become progressively worse and are sometimes fatal. Some treatments may improve symptoms temporarily or slow the disease's progression. Others may help improve quality of life. Researchers continue to study medications to treat pulmonary fibrosis. Donald HunterMy father courageously battled a debilitating disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His pulmonary fibrosis had no know cause. There was no cure. Dad fought daily to maintain a sense of normalcy which this disease robs from both you and your loved ones. The dependency upon supplemental oxygen and the limits of physical activity can test even the strongest of wills. Donald Hughes, Jr Don was a kind and loving son, husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was born May 6, 1949 and left us on Aug. 18, 2022 after a long and courageous struggle with life altering and insidious Pulmonary Fibrosis. He loved all things historical, geographical and political, traveling to far off places to be immersed in castles, pyramids and lush landscapes. He loved being outdoors: watching the beauty of dusk and the setting sun; standing under cover as thunderstorms and lightening raged overhead; enjoying a starry night and locating constellations, Jupiter, Mars and Venus; taking stealthy photos of myriad "critters" as they wandered through our yard. But most of all, he cherished sharing joys and challenges with his children and grandchildren, only wishing each happiness and living a life with purpose. He lived his life with optimism and hope, even during the final difficult years in his struggle with Type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary fibrosis. He never complained, but focused on appreciating tender moments and doing what he could to "leave on a high note." The loss of Don/Dad/Grandpa is devastating, yet we know how lucky we were to have him in our lives...our gratitude for his precious life will never diminish.
