James B. McWethy

Please donate in the name of James B. McWethy, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. James B. McWethy, age 76, of Downers Grove, IL, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2020, with his loving family at his side. Jim was the beloved husband of Susan McWethy (née Wasilkoff), the loving father of Todd (Krista Loomis) McWethy and Gretchen (Chris) Hupke, and the cherished grandfather of Sophia and Molly McWethy and Will and Kate Hupke. Jim was born on Chicago’s South Side to his loving parents, James D. McWethy and Muriel McWethy (née Berry), and raised in Beverly and in Palos Heights, IL. He was a proud graduate of Cornell College, Class of 1965, and earned a Master’s Degree in Economics from Indiana University, where he then became a Professor of Economics. Jim later returned home to the Chicago area and began his accomplished professional career. While working at the First National Bank of Chicago, he met Susan, his wife of 51 years. Jim dedicated many years to Berry Bearing Company, founded by his entrepreneur grandfather, Les Berry, where he further developed and perfected his dedication to business, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to impeccable service. After retiring from Berry Bearing, Jim eventually became the owner and operator of Mistwood Golf Club, McWethy’s Tavern, and the Mistwood Golf Dome, along with numerous other business ventures. Jim’s love and pride for Mistwood and love of the game of golf were only surpassed by his immense love and dedication to his family. He was quite possibly the kindest, most humble, and generous man to have blessed this world. To know Jim was to respect and love him. Jim will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date. In the meantime, Jim’s family kindly requests that any memories, stories, or tributes be sent directly to the family. My father, a self-taught artist, transforms a blank piece of paper into a masterpiece and captures the serene beauty only Mother Nature can create. Dad developed Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, and with the progression of the disease, he lost the ability to draw. Sadly, we lost Dad on March 14, 2022. Over the years, Dad crafted many drawings that he lovingly gave to family and friends and donated copies to non-profits as fundraisers for their cause. My sister, Beth, mother, Barbara, and I wish to honor our dad and husband by framing and selling copies of his drawings to raise money for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. This organization is leading the way to support people with the disease and continue research to find a cure. All funds received for the artwork will be donated to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar raised goes to help support the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, generosity and support. Our Beloved Reggie - A Tribute We lost our beloved mother, Jana, or “Reggie,” a nickname we fondly called her and which she lovingly embraced, on May 20th, 2021. Though strong in mind and spirit, her health declined rapidly over the past six months, the result of a lifelong battle she did not even know she was fighting, against a vicious cycle whereby intestinal blockages caused by a rare birth defect were making her aspirate into her lungs. (Throughout her life, she would frequently experience episodes of stomach upset, nausea and vomiting, but ignorant of the cause, would incorrectly attribute them to food poisoning.) Over time, these aspirations damaged and scarred her lung tissue, which cumulatively led to the onset of a terminal lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis. A non-smoker who was perpetually committed to making responsible dietary and nutritional choices, her untimely death was all the more tragic because, apart from the freak nature of these digestive and respiratory ailments, her mind and body were otherwise strong and resilient. We lost our beloved Reggie well before her time. Our mom was a strong, spirited woman with a big personality and an even bigger heart. She was a colorful character who loved flowers, but a wallflower she was not. She had such charisma, and a great sense of humor! Wherever she went, and whomever she met, chances are she made friends, and regardless always made an impression. She loved to chat, and was always eager to help, and ready to lend a hand, or an ear, depending on what was needed. She frequently donated her time, money, clothing, and other possessions to charity, often at the expense of her own bills. As an artist, she loved the joy of creative expression. She had a spunky energy and vitality that was as charming and endearing as it was invigorating and life-affirming. And nowhere was this spunk and energy more evident than in the zest with which she approached motherhood, and the sheer delight she took in being a mom, and later a grandmother. "Love" is truly the operative word to use when describing our Reggie. Her mission in life was simply to be the best mom she could be, and she was tireless in her dedication and devotion to us. Always active, never passive, she would relentlessly advocate for us and champion our causes. She took great pride in us and would tell our life story to anyone who would listen. While this embarrassed us at the time, it also revealed the limitless depth of her love for us, which was truly unconditional. As we reflect on our childhood, there are so many wonderful memories and stories that illustrate her love and devotion to us as our mother. Here are just a few that help paint the picture of the extraordinary woman and mother she was: At just 24 years old, our mom faced months of extreme anxiety when Lyla, the second of her four kids, was born prematurely with a severely dysfunctional heart, and was given a 5% chance of seeing her first birthday. Thanks to our mom’s love and tireless advocacy for Lyla, and the help of some extraordinary doctors, Lyla at age one month became the youngest, smallest person in the world to receive a pacemaker and survive. Because our mom refused to give up on Lyla, she is now 40 years old and happily married with three beautiful kids. Throughout our childhood, our mom encouraged wholesome outdoor activities, and among the first we can remember was gardening. While we (and anyone that saw the amazing gardens she grew throughout her life) wish we had her green thumb, we remember vividly how she taught us as children to plant any and everything from seasonal flowers to complete vegetable and herb gardens. She taught us at an early age to respect nature, telling us to be gentle with earthworms and rebury them so they could aerate the soil. Our mom always had the most impressive gardens (occasionally bordering on jungles) with exotic flowers, tropical fruits, towering bamboo, palm trees, and enough fresh Italian herbs to supply the dinner tables of the entire neighborhood. The smell of wild oregano and gardenias will always remind us of her and our wonderful childhood years. For every performance, award ceremony, or graduation, she would never fail to be the first parent there to reserve front row seats for our family. Whenever one of us was in a school play, we would notice our mom on the edge of her seat, wide-eyed with a huge smile, subconsciously mouthing all of the lines or lyrics, which she had invariably memorized while helping us to rehearse in the many nights leading up to the big event. Because she wasn’t visible to whichever sibling was on stage, it was clear that this truly endearing habit of hers was completely subconscious and born from pure, unadulterated delight in seeing each of her kids perform. Like most children, we were picky eaters. But our mom took it in stride and for fifteen years straight, she would get up at dawn to prepare four different breakfasts so that none of us would go to school hungry. Pumpkin muffins, banana bread, pecan pound cake, peach kuchen… you name it, our mom could bake it! For every birthday, our mom would go out of her way to make us feel special. In the early years, it was homemade cakes in the shape of our favorite character or toy - Garfield, Minnie Mouse, a fire truck - her creativity was limitless. As we got older, we moved on to cookie cakes. Every year, there would be a different theme according to our interests at the time. From Bart Simpson to soccer to Tweety Bird to fishing or gymnastics, she was perfectly in tune with each of our constantly changing interests, and she always nailed it year after year. When it came to the holidays, Charles Dickens himself could not have dreamed of a better Christmas celebration! Every December, there were Christmas songs and movies being played, homemade fresh pine wreathes (made by Reggie herself), Christmas lights, decorations, and heavenly aromas coming from her kitchen. Thanks to her, we’re all Christmas fanatics and will always celebrate the joyous Christmas season to the fullest. Each of us kids went through an awkward phase during our adolescence, but our mom’s intuition could always tell when something was bothering us. So, in addition to making us a homemade lunch, she would frequently include a handwritten note in our lunchboxes, containing words of encouragement, love, and advice. For every single soccer game, hockey game, basketball game, track meet, or gymnastics event we ever participated in, Reggie was always there, rain or shine. Whenever we were on the team bus, we would see her car following the bus to all of our away games, no matter how far away they were. For the final 100 meters of every race, Reggie would position herself right by the finish line, hanging her head out over the fence, cheering for us as we sprinted to the end. We will never forget hearing her shout, with vocal cords strained from overuse, “Go Hans! Go Lyla! Go Jake! Go Lara!” We can still hear these shouts of encouragement in our heads, as loud and as clear as when they boomed out thunderously from the stands. When the boys took up hockey, she didn’t think twice when they asked her to move her magnificent rose garden so we could expand our driveway for street hockey. This selfless act made our driveway the neighborhood hotspot for street hockey games. And when we accidentally broke a window pane, she quickly painted a sun whose rays emanated out along the exact path of the web of shattered glass, so our dad wouldn’t notice. As a result, it went undiscovered for years. She always had our backs. Throughout our schooling, our mom was always dedicated to ensuring our success (while reminding us to enjoy life too, for a “B does not stand for ‘bad’ at Berkeley”). From choir trips to Scandinavia, to Spanish immersions in Costa Rica and Mexico, to class trips to NYC and DC, Environmental science trips to the Galapagos, our mom was certainly a ready and willing chaperone! Beyond the great adventures she shared with us on school trips near and far, she made our everyday schooling just as fun. From dressing up as the artist Georges Seurat to teach 4th graders pointillism in a “Meet the Masters” series (she even cut a piece of her own hair to fashion as a mustache for the occasion!), to teaching middle school students how to sew boxer shorts and scrunchies, to creating a full year’s course for 2nd graders in Gifted Literature – at no charge to the Florida public school system – when she found out Lara’s school only offered gifted math and science… our Reggie stopped at nothing to make sure her 4 children continued to grow academically, while never losing sight of the fun in learning. Nearly every Friday night we went out as a family to our favorite sushi restaurant. Not only did she get us permanently addicted to sushi, family dinners like those were part of her routine to help keep our family close. At home, she would cook elaborate meals five days a week to ensure, no matter how busy our schedules got, that we always broke bread together as a family each night. When our childhood dog, Floppy, was deathly ill, we all resigned ourselves to her fate and prepared for the worst. But Reggie, unbeknownst to us, took her to various specialists to see what could be done. After school one day, Reggie surprised us by telling us to look in the backseat of the family station wagon, where we found a bandaged-up but happy and tail-wagging Floppy, who had just received lifesaving surgery. This beautiful act of maternal intervention prevented our hearts from being broken at young ages, and bought us five more years with our family dog. Year after year, sibling after sibling, she helped us move into and out of our college dorms. She bought sofas at thrift stores and rented a U-Haul truck to drive them all the way up to us. In many a telephone conversation, she would frequently ask if “our ears were burning today,” because she had been bragging about our accomplishments. All the way to the end, our mom was one of the strongest people we have ever known. The doctors told us that her lung capacity was no more than the size of a juice box, and that her breathing was so labored, she was essentially experiencing the sensation of drowning at all times of day. Confined to a hospital bed, she was able to endure this state of perpetual misery for six long months. Her ability to stay sane, let alone hopeful and positive, through this ordeal was nothing short of superhuman. During her final days, it was obvious that her sole motivation to go on was her love for us and her desire to keep us from being hurt. The incredible strength she exhibited throughout her life and especially in her final days will always inspire us to be as strong and as loving as she was. To give a final sense of who our beloved Reggie was, we wish to share a portion of the epitaph she wrote, which we found among her things after her passing: She had the Soul of a GypsyThe Heart of a HippieThe Spirit of a Fairy Please donate my body to medical research. Celebrate my life with a big party telling Reggie stories and LAUGHING. Think about your favorite Reggie times! Laugh! Know that I will always be watching over you! I don’t know how, YET, but you know Reggie ALWAYS FINDS A WAY!! Talk to me when you have a problem; I’ll do my best to get some ideas to resolve it into your head! Reggie, we love you more than words can say. You were the best mom we could’ve asked for. You taught us how to love unconditionally with our whole hearts. And we are committed to carrying that torch forward, now and always.
