Jerry Doyle Kirby, escorted by the angels, took a train ride into heaven Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2019, after a three-year struggle breathing from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made. Jerry was born in Springfield, Ohio, resided in St. Paul, Minn., for grade school and graduated Harding High School in 1960. He immediately began work with the Great Northern Railroad, which merged with Burlington Northern RR, retiring 34 years later in contract administration. His career transferred him and his family to Overland Park, Kan., for 10 years and then onto Fort Worth, in 1993. Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie; his parents, Doyle and Glady Kirby. SURVIVORS: Jan, wife of 42 years; father to Jeffrey (Leigh), Deborah (Justin), and Matthew (Codi); grandpa to Jessica, Megan, Jordan, Jennifer, Jack and Karl; great-grandpa; uncle to many nieces and nephews; cousin; and (AKA) "Kirby" a humorous dry-witted guy, fiercely loyal to many wonderful friends--many friendships lasting 70 years. Jerome “Jerry” LaSee On the afternoon of Sunday, March 19th 2017, with the sun shining down and the first signs of spring in the air, Jerry LaSee passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family. He put up a short and valiant fight, but ultimately lost to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis just a few months after his 66th birthday. Jim Danko My dad, Jim Danko, was a wonderful father and friend to everyone. He loved watching sports, playing golf, and spending time with his family the most. Almost 4 years ago, we found out he was sick with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. We did not know much about the disease at the time, but we quickly learned of its devastating impact to his health and well being. We all miss my dad everyday, but with his loss comes the opportunity to educate my friends and family about this horrible disease that cut my dads life short and is being diagnosed at a growing rate. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a respiratory disease that hardens the elasticity of the lungs, effectively killing off the tissue slowly by creating scar tissue. "Idiopathic" means unknown cause. This means doctors and others in the medical community do not know how patients contract the disease because it is still relatively new and because of this, most cases go miss diagnosed as pneumonia because of the initial symptoms. This was true for my dads case. At the present time, there is not a known cure for the disease besides medication to slow the progression and then eventually transplantation of the lungs. We tried getting him on the transplant list 2 separate times, but other health complications prevented him from getting a spot on the list he so badly needed. This is the case for many patients that we have learned. And even if the patient gets on the list, the journey to recovery has just begun. During the last year and a half of his life, I had the an active role in caring for my father along side my mom. Throughout the process, his spirits were good for the most part and he was always ready for a good laugh. He touched so many lives around him during his life and he also touched more after we learned someone was able to benefit from the gift of sight because of his generous donation of his corneas. He loved introducing the vastness of the sky to folks who had never never been above the ground and showing them the beautiful colors and patterns of our communities from above. If he was not in the air, he was probably looking up into the sky.Dad was a farmer. He worked hard on the land that he made our home, caring for the pastures to feed the cattle, mending fences, cutting and baling hay for the winter months' feeding. He enjoyed the animals and being outside on the farm with "Old Denny" the bull, the calves Smut and Rusty, and the many others that trusted him for their care.. He loved sharing the outdoors with our family and friends, taking us for tractor rides, pointing out the different species of plants and trees, sharing nature. He enjoyed being outside in the open air. Dad was also a proud and faithful employee of Eastern Airlines. He commuted from south Mississippi to the international airport in New Orleans, usually with his window down for the fresh air. That air would help him stay awake as he drove home in the middle of the night. He would awake the next day, breath deeply, and head outside to the chores of the farm before making the trip to the airport and Eastern Airlines offices again. It came on gradually. One day his hacking cough worsened, he became short of breath, he became weak, he couldn't climb up into the tractor, walk through the field, or fly among the clouds. It continued to slowly take his breath and eventually took his life. It was pulmonary fibrosis.
