Our father, Bruce, passed away on May 6, 2022, from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a life-threatening lung disease that literally took his breath away.There is no cure for IPF, but Bruce and his doctors tried everything to make the progression slower and less painful for him. IPF causes scar tissue to grow inside your lungs and makes it hard to breathe. The life expectancy for IPF is 2-5 years from diagnosis. Bruce made it eight years past his diagnosis.Like all things in his life, he worked as hard as possible to postpone the inevitable. And how lucky we are that he did. His efforts allowed him to be the best grandfather to his eight grandchildren, a source of strength for his three children, and a partner to our mother, Linda.Before his passing, he asked that we do what we could to help find a cure for IPF. Richard Franklin Allen, 79, of Orange Park, FL passed away May 10, 2022. He was born January 15, 1943 in Hamlet, NC to the late William and Belle (Williams) Allen. Richard was of the Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Orange Park. He was a dedicated employee at CSX Railroad, retiring after almost 40 years of service. An avid runner, he spent many of the best years of his life pounding the pavement in and around Orange Park. Richard ran multiple marathons and was most proud of his Chicago Marathon finish in under three hours. Through his running and volunteering with the Florida Striders Track Club, Richard met many of his closest friends. He enjoyed time spent with his family at the creek house in the mountains of North Carolina. Richard will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded by his parents, sister, Marcia Bryce and brother, Bill Allen. Richard is survived by his best friend and wife of 59 years, Jennifer “Jenny” Allen; children, Dave Allen (Shelly), Steve Allen (Jennifer) and Chris Allen-Black (Joe); sister, Barbara Power (Greg); grandchildren, Nicole Libal (Austin), Ryan Allen (Kenzie), Ashley Allen, Erika Allen and Abbie Allen; great grandchildren, Isaac Allen, Levi Allen, Asher Libal and Harper Libal with a host of extended family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am, Monday, May 16, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Orange Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00am until service time. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in Richard’s honor.
