In honor and memory of William Gurin, who recently passed away after a hard-fought battle with PF, we have set up this donation page. A lifelong New Yorker and graduate of Brooklyn Law, Bill immediately went into public service, volunteering his time during his first years as an attorney to pro bono work representing victims of napalm and Agent Orange exposure in lawsuits against the government. He dedicated his career to serving justice as a nationally respected prosecutor, representing the interests of the people at the Brooklyn District Attorney's office and as an Assistant US Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, before turning his attention back to the state and city levels in his work at the New York State Workers' Compensation Board and New York City Health + Hospitals Corporation. He was a Vietnam veteran, avid baseball fan and eternal Mets optimist, personal rideshare service for his children and their friends years before Uber, and compulsive consumer of news whose thirst for knowledge was unmatched and whose brilliant mind and dry, incisive wit illuminated everything around him. Most importantly, he was a loving husband of 40 years to Merryl and devoted father to his daughters, Merette and Lindsey. We love him without end and will miss him dearly. He liked to joke that he was the straw that stirred the drink, but truly the ripple effects of his life stretch far and wide. He left the world a better place than he found it. We hope he is breathing easy and taking a break from checking the weather for blizzards and thunderstorms. He will always be in our hearts. William Hunt died peacefully at the age of 74. He was beloved by his family, friends, and many others he met along the way. A stellar athlete, Bill led a very active life, frequently traveling the world and enjoying tennis, football, golf and most recently, pickleball! His family and friends always enjoyed his sense of humor, original take on politics, and wide-ranging intellect. William “Bill” Birge Our Dad, Bill Birge, was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis at age 74 years old. Neither he or his family were familiar with this disease. The prognosis looked grim — as it does for everyone with IPF/PF. He wasn’t a candidate for transplant, but was prescribed medications thought to slow the progression of the disease. Thankfully, he never contracted Covid, but experienced a set-back in October 2021, and was hospitalized. He thought that was going to be “the end”. From that point forward, he was tethered to an oxygenator, basically leaving him housebound. Through the anxiety and worry he continued to fight for air until he took his final breath on October 23, 2022. He made it seven years post diagnosis, just twelve days shy of his 81st birthday — though the prognosis was 2-5 years. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Bill loved spending time with his family, being outdoors, tinkering with old tractors and engines, planting a garden, and taking photographs. He was handsome and always had a corny joke to tell. There is a hole in our hearts and he will be missed immensely, but we are comforted knowing that he no longer has to struggle to breathe.
