Yin James Kao, PhD, MD Yin James Kao, PhD, MD, age 69, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 19, 2018, as a result of an acute exacerbation of undiagnosed Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, in El Paso, Texas. Thank you for honoring his memory with a donation.Dr. Kao was born the third of five children to the late Hsiang-Yang Kao and Chieh-Chen Liu on July 9, 1948 in Beijing, China. He came of age in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, graduating from National Tsing Hua university with a B.S. degree in Chemistry in July 1970. He moved to the United States to attend the Baylor College of Medicine in 1972, where he obtained his Ph.D in Biochemistry in June 1978. His Ph.D dissertation, "The Function and Property of Cholesterol in Bilayer Vesicles and Lipoproteins - A Study with Fluorescent Cholsterol Analogs", was awarded Best Dissertation by Rice University and Texas Medical Center Chapter, Sigma Xi Society. It was the highest academic honor of the year. After two years as a Project Investigator in Pharmacology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital, he entered The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and graduated with his M.D. in June 1983. This was followed by residency in Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University from 1983 to 1986. He met his wife, Wei-Wei, in Houston, while both were graduate students at Texas Medical Center. They married on October 25, 1975. He focused on Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology for both adult and pediatric patients, and practiced in both academic settings (Texas Tech University, University of California at Irvine) and private practice. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, a lover of nature and tinkerer. In both his professional and personal life, he was constantly driven by curiosity. He is survived by his wife Wei-Wei; daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Timothy; son Howard; granddaughter Alexandra; sister and brother-in-law Shen-Kuo Kao and Cheng-Ming Chen; sister and brother-in-law Hui-Ti Kao and Edward Wenting Hu; sister and brother-in-law Man Kao and Sunyuan Fu; and brother and sister-in-law Nai Kao and Tongmei Tai. Yogi lived a life of purpose, passion, and intention. He was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to many. He passed away peacefully in his home with loved ones on October 29th, 2024. He lived with Pulmonary Fibrosis in his usual way; he created solutions and found a way to live to the fullest despite his disease.
