Milton Whitney

Milton Whitney A son, brother, husband, father and grandfather whose greatest love in life was his family and his farm. He enjoyed talking with people, telling stories, country fair food, and ice cream. He loved cutting wood in the winter and baling hay in the summer. He farmed alongside his own father behind a pair of horses. He put new life into old equipment and could fix anything. He passed on this passion to his own children and grandchildren. His perfect day would be morning coffee, talking and reading the newspaper (the stories of interest outloud), the outdoor chores of the season and a family dinner with all his kids and grandkids. In his older years he enjoyed keeping his bird feeders full, maintaining his farm, small engine repair for local townspeople, and visiting with family and friends. His spirit will be missed. Please donate in the name of Milton Whitney, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Kyungil "KC" Cho "The Mountains are calling, and I must go."KC cared deeply about people and always put others first. He loved his family, his home, his garden, and his neighborhood in OC. His greatest joy was being a grandfather after he retired from 30 years of public service, working for the State of California. He was proud of his Korean heritage, his alma mater (Seoul National University), and his service in the Korean Air Force.K.C. did not let IPF limit him from living life to the fullest. He was passionate about the outdoors and was true to the philosophy of John Muir who wrote, “The Mountains are calling, and I must go.” He hiked and skied until his last year with small oxygen tanks on his back. Up until his last month, he walked an hour a day on the beach, swam in a pool with his oxygen tanks on floats, and exercised with a personal trainer. KC used a portable oxygen machine to travel and spent his last year adventuring... driving across America to see the national parks, hiking in the footsteps of Charles Darwin in the Galapagos Islands, and becoming a Hawaiian "native,” enjoying stunning Maui sunsets with his toes in the sand. We hope his story encourages other patients with IPF to stay active. Please donate in his name so that treatments or a cure can be developed to improve life for sufferers of this terrible disease. William Gurin

In honor and memory of William Gurin, who recently passed away after a hard-fought battle with PF, we have set up this donation page. A lifelong New Yorker and graduate of Brooklyn Law, Bill immediately went into public service, volunteering his time during his first years as an attorney to pro bono work representing victims of napalm and Agent Orange exposure in lawsuits against the government. He dedicated his career to serving justice as a nationally respected prosecutor, representing the interests of the people at the Brooklyn District Attorney's office and as an Assistant US Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, before turning his attention back to the state and city levels in his work at the New York State Workers' Compensation Board and New York City Health + Hospitals Corporation. He was a Vietnam veteran, avid baseball fan and eternal Mets optimist, personal rideshare service for his children and their friends years before Uber, and compulsive consumer of news whose thirst for knowledge was unmatched and whose brilliant mind and dry, incisive wit illuminated everything around him. Most importantly, he was a loving husband of 40 years to Merryl and devoted father to his daughters, Merette and Lindsey. We love him without end and will miss him dearly. He liked to joke that he was the straw that stirred the drink, but truly the ripple effects of his life stretch far and wide. He left the world a better place than he found it. We hope he is breathing easy and taking a break from checking the weather for blizzards and thunderstorms. He will always be in our hearts. Go to Josephine Cometti

Josephine Cometti

Josephine Cometti As you look at all the wonderful photographs of the life of Josie Cometti, you will notice something - there are virtually no portraits of her by herself. Our family looked through thousands of photos for her funeral and memorial services and we found that in nearly every picture we have, over the course of her 75 years, Josie is always captured with someone else - her husband, her children, her friends, her grandchildren. This is because Josie was a welcoming and loving person who was much happier when she was with people and not alone. She was always talking, chatting, cooking, painting, playing cards, volunteering, working, dancing. She was always part of a community, even if she had to create that community herself. Have you ever noticed that in every neighborhood, there’s always one house where the kids always seem to congregate? That one house where the refrigerator door never gets to close, because everyone is in and out of it, and yet the fridge also never seems to ever run out of food? That was her home, and that was based on her effort and her hospitality. She was a woman of contradictions. She was born in Italy - moving over when she was only 20 years old. But she was fiercely proud of being American. With her husband Mario, she traveled all over the country, visiting and living everywhere from coastal Maine to Indian reservations in the badlands of South Dakota. She embraced her adopted country, and she raised her children as Americans, showing them an endless supply of love and patience. But this picture of an extrovert doesn’t tell the whole story. She was, in some less obvious ways, very shy and sensitive. Josie spent much of her childhood in a convent, being raised by nuns, due to illnesses she suffered through in the poverty of post-war Italy. When she was healthy enough to go home, her parents and siblings were like strangers to her. She adjusted, but the experience left her with a sense that family and friends and indeed life itself, were all things to be clutched closely as if they could be lost at any moment. It made her wary of loss but also determined to grab life and opportunity by the throat. At 19, when she met a dashing American medical student who asked her to marry him and move to another country, she set aside her worries and embraced the kind of change very few of us are brave enough to attempt. The world was bigger then - moving to the USA meant she wouldn’t see her family for many years. A different language, a different culture. But she took the chance, despite not speaking a word of English when she first arrived. She made it work, through sheer determination and with good humor. She could take a joke and she could deal one out too. The only thing she didn’t like was if you made fun of her accent - that might earn you a whack. She loved her husband and they became immediately inseparable from the day they met until the day they parted. They spent nearly 56 years together, going out dancing together every Saturday night. They even worked together, with Josie managing Dr. Mario’s office. They raised four children, lost one to illness and were lucky enough to be blessed with six grandchildren. She was tireless. Josie and Mario were always the first ones out on the dance floor and the last to leave. She was tough, stubborn even. When the doctors told her she had pulmonary fibrosis and gave her 2 to 5 years to live, she metaphorically shook her fist at them: “I’ll show you!.” She held out for eight years, thanks mostly to the amazing dedication of her husband’s care - but anyone who knew her wouldn’t have been surprised if she had been able to hold out for several years more, just out of sheer willpower. But when her illness took a turn for the worse, her family gathered around and she was able to finally let go. One of her grandchildren, unaccustomed to the idea of death, asked: “Does this mean I can never see her again?” Josie’s presence was so strong that it was hard to imagine she wouldn’t be here - even after her passing. We do feel her loss, and unfortunately, we won’t see her again, not in the same way as before. But she lives on, in her children and grandchildren, in the values she passed on to them, and she lives on in our hearts. Her presence has not diminished, it has only changed. She will be remembered by the many people whose lives she has touched. She would not have wanted memories of her to evoke sadness. She would have wanted her friends and family instead to continue to embrace life as she did - to laugh, to eat, to chat… to dance. Let us be together, not alone - as a community - the community she helped to make, and let us celebrate a life that was lived with determination, pluck and an endless supply of affection and kindness for the people she cared about. Please donate in the name of Josie, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Go to Joe Crawford

Joe Crawford

In loving memory of Joe Crawford Joe Crawford, age 66, was an active member of Pinckneyville, IL and cared deeply about the town and its residents. He was a long-time member of United Methodist Men, the Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce, and the Pinckneyville Optimist Club. On Sundays, he could be found at the United Methodist Church of Pinckneyville, usually followed by a lunch at Red Hawk Country Club with his family. During the week, Joe could be found at the bank, smiling and laughing with those who walked through its doors. To Joe, it didn’t matter if you were there as a customer, worked there for a day or your entire career; to him, you were family. Joe’s other full-time job was being a father to son, Brian, daughter, Julie, and grandfather to his precious granddaughter, Tallulah. He enjoyed many years of family reunions and vacations and rarely missed a ballgame, band concert, or play. Joe was an avid sports fan and loved his favorite teams; the Pinckneyville Panthers, the Fighting Illini, the SIU Salukis, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the St. Louis Rams. For many years, he could be found most winter Friday and Saturday nights in Thomas Gymnasium cheering on the Panthers with his family. Throughout his life he was an avid golfer and fan of the PGA, the highlight of which was attending the 2018 PGA Championship with his son. Joe lived with his pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis for over a year. While he did not let the disease stop him from doing what he loved, he lost his battle on January 16, 2020. He lived a joyous life with a full heart, but left far too soon. Please donate in the name of Joe Crawford, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found.
