Anthony "Tony" Cafoncelli

Anthony "Tony" Cafoncelli Doctor Antonio Romulo Cafoncelli died on January 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in 1938 to Nelida and Romulo Cafoncelli in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Antonio, known to friends and family as “Tony”, graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires Medical School at the age of 21 and worked in various hospitals until moving to Mar del Plata where he did his residency at the Community Hospital where made life-long friends whom he kept in touch with until recently. He had the fondest memories of his residency years riding around the coastal town of Mar del Plata on his motorcycle. He then moved back to Buenos Aires to work at Hospital Peña prior to immigrating to the US. In December 1970, Tony landed in Philadelphia, PA. He arrived wearing a light linen suit (after all it was summer in Argentina!). Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, he was warmly welcomed to his residency at the University of Pennsylvania by C. Everett Koop, who later served as the 13th Surgeon General of the United States. To further hone his specialty, Tony practiced in Wilmington, DE, Atlanta, GA, Charlotte, NC (as Chief Resident), and Chicago, IL. Upon becoming Board Certified in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Tony settled in Charleston, WV in 1980 where he spent the next twenty five years as a driving force behind Thoracic and Cardiovascular Associates, Inc, one of the leading surgical practices in the Mid-Atlantic region at the time. Upon his retirement, Tony completed his Master’s degree in Public Health at WVU. Shortly after, he and his wife, Teresa, relocated to Washington, DC where he interned at the World Health Organization. In addition, Tony taught an epigenetics course at American University’s OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program. Tony was the definition of a life-long learner. Tony was passionate about his fine rugs, wine, travel, Argentine football, and his family. He had a deep appreciation for and knowledge of Persian & Oriental rugs and would enthusiastically launch into conversations about their intricate craftsmanship. He was a wine connoisseur who loved his Malbecs. He traveled the world with Teresa visiting the wine regions of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal (California snuck in there too!). Their love of travel was infectious and they visited over 30 countries across 5 different continents. In December, Tony saw his beloved Albiceleste win the World Cup for a 3rd time in history. Above all, Tony was devoted to his global network of friends and family. Not a day went by when he did not receive or make a long-distance phone call to tell a funny story or share a friendly rant. We all have countless memories of his animated humor, boisterous laugh and wide-ranging opinions (which he was always happy to share). Although Tony became a doctor at a young age, his most cherished titles were Husband, Father and especially Nono. The children miss Nono’s impish personality, silly jokes and their wide-ranging conversations on numerous topics. Nono will forever be in their hearts and part of who they are. Tony is survived by his wife, Teresa Guzman, his daughter, Anna Cafoncelli and her husband, Joseph Nassif, Teresa’s daughters, Silvia Lucero and Monica Lucero, his most beloved grandchildren, Nícola and Luca Villarino, and Monica’s husband José Villarino. Chip Hall “I bid all my friends a fond farewell. I have been fighting IPF since May of 2017. It has been stable for the last 4+ years. I have been keeping my IPF strugle private. Then end of september 2021 suddenly my lungs started deteriorating rapidly I have been in and out of hospital since October 4th. Current stay started Dec 12th. It has been another exciting Chip adventure. I took a challenge to catch a big wave. Tough ride. Been on top for a long time. Commanding view. Peaks and troughs, Stumbles and back to balance. It’s been an adventurous ride. Somehow I lost sight of my beach and the wave has taken me to a new shore. One with new beginnings. I count my blessings with all my loved ones, friends and advisories who all educated me well. My spirit lives on. No journey too tough if you have faith, will and inner strength. My life has been one big exciting adventure. For which I am grateful. Many travels and many life threatening journeys, of which I have survived. Much love, great friends, good times. . I have the opportunity to say goodbye, most people don’t get that. On your next wave I could be your steering rudder. God bless y’all.Don Carlos Hall VI “Chip” 11/18/1958 - 1/18/22. Frederick Q Vogel Please donate in the name of Frederick Q Vogel, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Captain Frederick Quirin Vogel passed away at home in Point Pleasant, NJ, with his family by his side on January 27, 2020; his valiant battle with pulmonary fibrosis over. Fred was born a Leo on August 11, 1947, in Plainfield, NJ, to the late Anne and Robert Vogel. Raised in Cranford, NJ, Freddy attended Cranford HS where he excelled in sports, especially his favorite, baseball. Fred continued to play baseball at Gettysburg College, graduating in 1969. There, he forged a true fraternity with his Sigma Chi brothers. They remained fast friends; the stories getting better every telling. Fred also married his college sweetheart, Barb, in 1969. Last November, they celebrated 50 wonderful years together; a love story that inspired all who know them. He enlisted in the US Navy after college and served in Naval Intelligence at Clark AFB in the Philippines where he and Barb acquired a love for scuba diving. On return to the US, he was selected for Navy Officer Candidate School and went on to serve 34 years including time in the Naval Reserves, reaching the officer rank of Captain. He was recalled to active duty in Washington, D.C. during the 1990’s middle east conflicts and after 9/11, served at the Defense Intelligence Agency, FBI, NSA, Homeland Security and the Pentagon. At retirement, he was Deputy Director for Intelligence at DIA, Terrorism Analysis Division with this final commendation, “Despite major obstacles, his work resulted in a significant contribution to the protection of United States forces worldwide.” Fred earned his MBA at Drexel University and his civilian career included financial positions at Siemens, Computervision, Burroughs and Equitable Life. He most enjoyed his post-retirement gig as host and story-teller at the Sea Crest by the Sea, the inn that he and Barb owned in Spring Lake, NJ. Fred was very proud of the bond he shared with his daughter Leigh, forged when she was a toddler and he a ‘stay-at-home dad’. He shared his love of baseball with Chris while coaching countless little league games and travelling to high school and college baseball games around the country. Fred especially loved his grandchildren learning to swim in the family pool and the annual family trips to the Cayman Islands. He got great joy from tinkering in the garage with his grandkids, taking apart or fixing everything from boats to toasters. His positivity and can-do attitude made him a great role model for his entire family. Pop-pop was always quick to tell his family how much he loved them. Fred was a man of deep faith; he walked the walk and talked the talk. First at Calvary Lutheran in Cranford and then Holy Trinity in Manasquan where he served in many volunteer capacities and impacted many souls. Fred is survived by his wife, Barbara Wold Vogel; children, Leigh (Michael) DeMarco, and Christopher (Jill) Vogel; four cherished grandchildren, Max, Evan, Nels, and Lacy; sister Dale (Michael) Malekoff and brother Charles (Gail) Vogel, brother-in-law Ted Wold; 8 (grand) nieces and nephews and many cousins. He is predeceased by his sister Barbara Ann (Neil) Koopman. Fred was a gentle, loving, and generous husband, father, grandfather, friend, leader and mentor. He is dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, February 9th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6 Osborn Avenue, Manasquan, NJ. Reception following. Interment will be private.
