Thank you for supporting our Poultry Embryology and Incubation Project for our Wiregrass 4-H students. We began this year’s school project in February and will continue through May 2019 with a dozen schools participating. Our fundraising goal is to purchase a lock-out buzzer system for the Wiregrass 4-H Embryology Bowl competition. The cost is $250. This system will be used for practices as well as the competition. Last year was our pilot year where we completed the project in 11 schools with over 500 students. Student age divisions included 22 Cloverbuds, 374 Juniors & Intermediates, and 129 Seniors. The school project required meeting with classes for 5 continuous weeks of lessons concentrating on the life cycle, candling, hatch and brooding. An optional 6th week focused on dissecting unhatched eggs and comparing them to the embryo development chart provided by Auburn University Poultry Science and Extension Specialists. Our slogan at 4-H is “Learn by Doing.” The 4-H Chick Chain project gives young people the opportunity to do just that. In May , each student receives pullets that they raise through the Summer. Through this project, students learn much more than poultry management skills. They also learn about responsibility, record keeping, entrepreneurship, and communication. At the project’s end, the students bring their best hens to the Northeast Alabama Chick Chain Show and Auction. A donation of $60 will supply the prize money for participants in one showmanship or breed class. Sponsors of each class will be recognized in the program, promotional materials, and live during the show and Auction at the VFW Fair Showgrounds in Fort Payne, AL.

With nearly 109,000 members and participants strong, Alabama 4-H is the largest youth development organization in the state of Alabama. Supported by families, partners, staff, volunteers, and youth, we have the strength and capacity to grow young people with the confidence, curiosity, and life skills to become college, career, and family ready. Alabama 4-H, part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, has expanded its resources to include not only traditional programs, such as 4-H livestock judging and 4-H competitive events but also new opportunities as well. 4-H offers an after-school robotics club and opportunities to fly drones. 4-H members can explore Alabama’s 132,419 miles of rivers and streams to examine the health of local water bodies. These are just a few of the many ways your gift can provide endless smiles in today’s Alabama 4-H. 4-H is for everyone, and 4-H clubs can be found in each of the 67 counties across Alabama. No matter the location or project, Alabama 4-H grows confident young people with the life skills to thrive in today’s world and succeed in their boldest dreams for tomorrow. Help young people and their families gain the skills needed to be a proactive force in their communities and to develop ideas for a more innovative world. “4-H has made me the person I am today. I have learned more about the world through 4-H than I would have ever dreamed when I joined at 9 years old. 4-H has been life-changing for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Luke Stephens2022-23 Alabama 4-H State Ambassador
