Alabama 4-H, part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, has expanded its resources to include not only traditional programs, such as 4-H livestock judging and 4-H competitive events, but new opportunities, as well. By participating in Alabama Water Watch, Walker County 4-H members have an opportunity to learn about watershed stewardship through science-based, hands-on experiences in the classroom and at the creek. Youth and adults have fun with science, master new skills, make a difference in their communities, gain awareness of natural resource issues, and enjoy time outside. 4-H is for everyone, and in order to expand this project beyond Bankhead Middle School, training and certifying more Walker County and Jasper City teachers and their students, we need more equipment. Thank you for supporting our efforts to train and empower these citizen-scientists! “I strongly believe that two of the greatest things 4-H has taught me is to value and appreciate the differences in people; and that it is my responsibility and privilege to help others through service.” Marion Bell2020-21 Alabama 4-H State Ambassador

Clay County

Last year alone, Clay County 4-H had nearly 600 members and participants. This was nearly 41% of the youth population in the county, and surpasses most other counties in the state. In 2019, Clay County 4-H brought animal programs such as Chick Chain, Hop To It, and Livestock judging and quiz bowl teams. To date, Clay County serves all youth in public schools with 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th grade clubs and private schools from 4th-12th grades. It also offers a Livestock Club, a Great Outdoors Club, and a Homeschool Entomology program. We also have the opportunity to establish a Robotics program, a Life Skills program, and a Self-Sustaining year-Round Gardening program. Clay County 4-H is a non-profit and relies solely on donations to sustain its program within the county. Without support, our programs will soon cease to exist in Clay County. Spring is just around the corner and our Grow Getters Garden Club is getting ready to plant! The mission of the Grow Getters Garden Club is to give back to the community. Youth active in the club are learning Junior Master Gardener curriculum and gaining first hand experience growing a variety of produce. This club is perfect for anyone who wants to get dirty, learn to grow produce, and participate in giving back to the community. Aside from a small portion that will be used for cooking demos for club members, ALL produce will be donated to people in need in the community. As many are aware, gardening is a project that takes time and money to upkeep. We are looking to raise money for more efficient gardening equipment, plants and seeds, and 10x10 tents to provide a shaded area while working in the summer. 100% of your donation goes to Crenshaw County and will be used to give back to the community. Thank you for supporting our Poultry Embryology and Incubation Project for our Wiregrass 4-H students. We began this year’s school project in February and will continue through May 2019 with a dozen schools participating. Our fundraising goal is to purchase a lock-out buzzer system for the Wiregrass 4-H Embryology Bowl competition. The cost is $250. This system will be used for practices as well as the competition. Last year was our pilot year where we completed the project in 11 schools with over 500 students. Student age divisions included 22 Cloverbuds, 374 Juniors & Intermediates, and 129 Seniors. The school project required meeting with classes for 5 continuous weeks of lessons concentrating on the life cycle, candling, hatch and brooding. An optional 6th week focused on dissecting unhatched eggs and comparing them to the embryo development chart provided by Auburn University Poultry Science and Extension Specialists.
