4-H Pig Squeal Show & Auction

Madison County

The 4-H Pig Squeal Project teaches young people recommended management practices for growing and raising swine. Participants develop swine management skills, learn to produce healthy pigs, develop awareness of business management, and develop record-keeping skills. Youth received two feeder pigs that were about 60 days old and about 50 pounds in January. All pigs came from a reputable nursery and were properly vaccinated. Youth cared for these pigs for about 120 days. On April 20, 2024 the youth bring one of the hogs to the Pig Squeal Project Show and Auction where it will be presented and sold. Youth will receive any prize money awarded along with a portion of the auction proceeds. Bidders will have the option of taking possession of the live hogs or sending them to a local processor. The processor will be on site during the action and will take possession of the pigs after the auction. Participants are asked to find donors who are willing to contribute financially to the Pig Squeal fund which helps fund project awards, ribbons and professional support at the annual Pig Squeal Sale and Auction that will be held on April 20, 2024. Sponsorship Levels: Bronze: $100 (name in the program, pen sponsor) Silver: $250 (class sponsor) Gold: $500 (banner on show ring) Platinum: $1000 (title sponsor, big banner)

Support Limestone County Youth and the 4-H Pig Squeal Program! We cordially invite you to participate as a sponsor for the 2024 4-H Pig Squeal Auction and Show. The 4-H Pig Squeal Project teaches young people recommended management practices for growing and raising swine. Participants develop swine management skills, learn to produce healthy pigs, develop an awareness of business management, learn showmanship techniques, and develop record-keeping skills. Students receive two barrow pigs when they are about 60 days old, and youth must raise them for approximately 120 days. Once the pigs have matured, the youth will show them at the 4-H Pig Squeal Show and Auction. The Limestone County Extension Office will host the 4-H Pig Squeal Show and Auction on May 4, 2024, at the Tennessee Valley Research Station and Extension Center: 9494 Experimental Loop, Madison, AL 35756. The show will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by the auction at 12:00 p.m. We currently have 15 4-H members participating and plan to auction at least 15 pigs on this date. Your sponsorship will assist with prizes and awards for students, materials to build panels for the show, and additional fees that are part of conducting an event on this scale. We are asking for donations to help offset this event’s cost and would appreciate any financial assistance you could give. All donations given will go back to the Limestone County youth! If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Chloe Wilson at csw0040@aces.edu 256.614.9386, or 256.232.5510. We hope to see you at the show on May 4th to support our Limestone County youth participants.

Alabama 4-H, part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, has expanded its resources to include not only traditional programs, such as 4-H livestock judging and 4-H competitive events, but also new opportunities as well. One such non-traditional program is 4-H RiverKids, the kayaking education and safety program. Funds provided to Escambia County 4-H will go to help provide necessary equipment for instruction and safety, including sit-on-top kayaks and life-vests (PFDs). This equipment will also be able to expand the reach and availability of RiverKids programming to the entire southwest region of Alabama. Your gift can provide endless smiles in today’s Alabama 4-H.

Etowah County

It is an exciting time in Etowah County 4-H! In an effort to recognize those outstanding graduating seniors in 4-H and give those younger youth something to look forward to, the Etowah County 4-H Advisory Board has decided to start a local 4-H scholarship program. The recipients will be selected based on their application and interview with the selection committee. Etowah County has one of the premiere 4-H programs in state in large part to the leadership of the older youth; the scholarship program will help to build on the momentum generated by their passion for 4-H and desire to invest in the younger members. Spring is just around the corner and our Grow Getters Garden Club is getting ready to plant! The mission of the Grow Getters Garden Club is to give back to the community. Youth active in the club are learning Junior Master Gardener curriculum and gaining first hand experience growing a variety of produce. This club is perfect for anyone who wants to get dirty, learn to grow produce, and participate in giving back to the community. Aside from a small portion that will be used for cooking demos for club members, ALL produce will be donated to people in need in the community. As many are aware, gardening is a project that takes time and money to upkeep. We are looking to raise money for more efficient gardening equipment, plants and seeds, and 10x10 tents to provide a shaded area while working in the summer. 100% of your donation goes to Crenshaw County and will be used to give back to the community. Thank you for your support of our youth and community!
