4-H Pig Squeal Show & Auction

Madison County

The 4-H Pig Squeal Project teaches young people recommended management practices for growing and raising swine. Participants develop swine management skills, learn to produce healthy pigs, develop awareness of business management, and develop record-keeping skills. Youth received two feeder pigs that were about 60 days old and about 50 pounds in January. All pigs came from a reputable nursery and were properly vaccinated. Youth cared for these pigs for about 120 days. On April 20, 2024 the youth bring one of the hogs to the Pig Squeal Project Show and Auction where it will be presented and sold. Youth will receive any prize money awarded along with a portion of the auction proceeds. Bidders will have the option of taking possession of the live hogs or sending them to a local processor. The processor will be on site during the action and will take possession of the pigs after the auction. Participants are asked to find donors who are willing to contribute financially to the Pig Squeal fund which helps fund project awards, ribbons and professional support at the annual Pig Squeal Sale and Auction that will be held on April 20, 2024. Sponsorship Levels: Bronze: $100 (name in the program, pen sponsor) Silver: $250 (class sponsor) Gold: $500 (banner on show ring) Platinum: $1000 (title sponsor, big banner)

Our slogan at 4-H is “Learn by Doing.” The 4-H Chick Chain project gives young people the opportunity to do just that. In May , each student receives pullets that they raise through the Summer. Through this project, students learn much more than poultry management skills. They also learn about responsibility, record keeping, entrepreneurship, and communication. At the project’s end, the students bring their best hens to the Northeast Alabama Chick Chain Show and Auction. A donation of $60 will supply the prize money for participants in one showmanship or breed class. Sponsors of each class will be recognized in the program, promotional materials, and live during the show and Auction at the VFW Fair Showgrounds in Fort Payne, AL.

Please consider supporting these youth by contributing funds or becoming a 4-H volunteer. Youth start out with the genesis basic bows and move up to more advanced compound bows. We need funds to help sustain this growing club. Youth are learning life skills as well as perfecting their archery skills at each club meeting. This group meets with our two trained and certified 4-H Archery coaches every Friday. Please consider supporting the youth of Marion County!-Rebecca Danley, 4-H Agent
