Special Olympics has been a place where I can be myself and also enjoy participating in sports year-round to stay fit and be part of a group with others just like me. Fitness54 Pickleball Round Robin Event, September 17, to benefit Special Olympics.

Hi there! My name is Maike Schwarz, and I love taking pictures in my free time. I also have an older sister named Svenja, who was born prematurely and is therefore mentally disabled, but physically very able. This Christmas card project is where these two worlds meet: a photo card with a message. Special Olympics (the world’s largest sports organization for anyone with intellectual and physical disabilities) has been the light of our lives for quite some time. Svenja has been gifted natural talent, mixed with her hard work, for sports. Last year, she made it to the Germany Track & Field team and went to the World Special Olympics Games in Abu Dhabi, where she won two gold medals. As you can imagine, this was the most amazing experience for her and our family, and for every other athlete at this event. This year has been a difficult and confusing time for many of us. Through it all, I’ve seen my sister and many other disabled individuals struggle in their own way, and for Svenja it was difficult to stop going to her sport events, which used to give her structure, meaning, emotional release and happiness. Special Olympics had to cancel most of their events, which is why I decided to try and support them from how I can: through photos. I’ve dedicated some time to take these Christmas pictures / cards and asked the households for a small donation to SO in return. Growing up with a special needs sibling, I have witnessed first hand, the difference Special Olympics made in his life, and nothing makes me happier than raising money for their good cause via this race! Tough Mudder is an endurance style obstacle course race in which participants attempt to finish a 10 mile track containing 20 obstacles. Obstacles like Arctic Enema (swimming through Icy, freezing water for a short distance), or Electroshock Therapy (walking through 1000 hanging wires zapping 10,000V: a personal non-favorite) that test mental as well as physical strength.

We are Colm O'Connor, Bryce Stevenson, and Clay Weaver and we are students at Severna Park High School SPHS. We are members of the leadership institute at SPHS and are currently in the undertaking of our senior year project Making a Difference Through Special Olympics. The goal of our project is to promote Unified Sports at SPHS and raise money for the Special Olympics so that every athlete has an equal chance to compete and have fun in athletics. We hope you help us create a better future for athletes with special needs, one dollar at a time.

While hiking the 500-mile Colorado Trail, I'm hiking to raise awareness and funds to support Special Olympics. These athletes are such an inspiration with their courage, dedication, and heart as they overcome their individual disabilities to rise up to the challenge to be better athletes while strengthening bonds with their communities. The goal is to raise $500, which is $1 for every mile of the Colorado Trail. Together, we can all be stronger athletes with the proper training and motivation!

Welcome to my 2021 birthday fundraising event! This year I have chosen to raise money for the Special Olympics organization. I have been so blessed to be able to coach athletes all the way to the State Level of the Special Olympics and have witnessed the incomparable community that the Special Olympics offer to differently-abled athletes. Help me continue to make the Special Olympics, and all the benefits they offer, available to every athlete!

Happy Birthday, Jeffrey Allen Loomis! I never met him, but his life has influenced mine in so many ways. Three years before I was born, my brother, Jeffrey Allen Loomis, came into this world. From all accounts, he was a sweet little angel, and he was loved to the moon and back. Jeffrey had Downs Syndrome, and he had a heart condition that kept him in and out of the hospital. He ultimately succumbed to complications from pneumonia while my parents lived overseas when he was not yet two years old. His life, his memory, have always been part of my life, shaping the love between my parents and me, who taught me to celebrate every accomplishment, because no matter how big or small they are, every one of them is important. I am certain that Jeffrey felt that same kind of love, that same kind of encouragement with each of his accomplishments, even in his short number of months here with my parents. This year, Jeffrey would have turned 50 on December 7, 2020. In his honor, I plan to do what I love the most… walk. I walk for everything I believe in and this year, I walk for Jeffrey. His spirit lives on in my own Jeffrey Alen McKnight, who at 17 is full of life with an undying love of sports. My mom has said that my Jeffrey has all of the gifts that her Jeffrey missed out on… and that his big smile, kind heart, and love of life is exactly that of her Jeffrey! He couldn’t have had a better namesake. Last spring, Jeffrey had the opportunity to work with students at his school who participate in the Special Olympics and loved the teamwork and utter happiness on the faces of each of the athletes. And I couldn’t have been more proud to see him out there with these incredible kids. It was one of my favorite athletic events of the year! I am certain that my brother would have been a fierce competitor out there. It is in his blood! Join me this month of December, Jeffrey Allen’s birth month, to walk, run, or bike a short 1.9 miles (or more, if you choose). Each tenth of a mile represents each month of his short life, a life that left an imprint on the hearts of many. And if you choose, please consider a donation to the Special Olympics in his name. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a 50th birthday… get out there, enjoy the fresh air that we all need right now, and walk! The Samurai Shodown community is dedicated to supporting a strong and inclusive competitive spirit for all players. Through a community driven effort, the Issen Madness event will provide learning opportunities for new gamers, will promote healthy competition among players, and will provide opportunities for to better serve our growing community. The Special Olympics is an organization that understands the importance of providing coaching and competitive opportunities for athletes and space for communities to develop that competitive spirit we all cherish. As one of the philanthropy chairmen of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland, I am proud to display our dunk tank event inspired by the Polar Bear Plunge. Brent had a “Can do” mindset & lived his life as a normal kid with special “superpowers”, on his terms. He enjoyed bowling, swimming, family/friends & challenged EVERYONE to a game of UNO (you’d better bring your A game or he’d own you LOL). On June 28, 2021, Mutinta Nkatiko tragically passed away from COVID. Mutinta was a joy to be around and radiated love. While we celebrate her life, we also want to celebrate the things that meant so much to her. Mutinta loved the Special Olympics and was such a proud athlete. She would excitedly tell us about all the activities she participated in and how great her coaches were. This fundraiser is to help other Special Olympians achieve their dreams and honor Mutinta's legacy.

As summer approaches, we all love to dress casual and wear shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and baseball hats. Special Olympics does a lot of good for the developmentally disabled community both here in Michigan and across the country. I can even proudly say I have a few friends that have been gold medal winners.
