RPS has a culture of teamwork, empathy, and taking the initiative. This culture is built on the foundation of our shared values, some of which state: “We all need one another. We are all cogs in a wheel,” “Empathy for the other person is not a weakness,” “We adhere to the highest standards of moral and ethical behavior,” and “We run to problems, not away from them.” That last one, Adam Mazan, Vice President Pacific Region, and his team in southern California took quite literally. They were looking to make an impact. They were looking to be Better Together, but how? Adam and his team settled upon the idea of a charity run. However, it wouldn’t be any standard 5K or half-marathon…or even a full marathon. To make a difference, they were looking to be different. Run 36 miles in 36 hours! Work some, then run some. Eat. Sleep. Work. Run. Repeat! Join us in supporting Adam and his team as they become Better Together and run to benefit some of their favorite charities. Some team members plan on running all 36 miles themselves, while others will be doing it as a relay team. This team proves that when you work together, you can make things better!

Birthday

I was first introduced to Special Olympics at a young age tagging along with my brother Jeff to his basketball practices at the old Boston College Plex. Now as a Senior at BC and a member of BC’s own Special Olympics team, my relationship with the organization has come full circle. Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to witness firsthand the joy and happiness S.O. brings to people with intellectual or physical disabilities. If you know me or Jeff in any way I have no doubt you understand how important of an impact it has had on both of our lives. For my 22nd birthday this year please consider donating to the Special Olympics in our honor. No amount is too small and I will be matching each donation made!

Inspired by Debbie Cowart July 2, 1964 – March 1, 2014 Debbie was born with Down’s syndrome, holes in all four chambers of her heart. I never heard her complain about anything. When I grow up I want to be like my big sister Debbie participated in Special Olympics almost her whole life. Not always the fastest or threw the longest, but every time she finished she would shout with joy ‘I Won, I Won!’ When I grow up I want to be like my big sister Debbie called everyone she met friend, and she meant it! She loved all without question, didn’t care what you had, where you had been, what you had done When I grow up I want to be like my big sister Debbie loved to go to Church. She would worship the Lord joyfully with a freedom seldom seen When I grow up I want to be like my big sister Debbie is with The Father now, this I truly believe. She is dancing, singing, and praising God all day long. When I grow up I want to be like my big sister ______________________________March 1, 2020 I've got a lot of growing up to still do. One step I've taken is personal growth and understanding. The Hoka Hey is a big part of that. The Hoka Hey is an every other year motorcycle challenge that encourages riders to raise funds for their chosen charity.Today I'm launching my Hoka Hey campaign to raise funds for my chosen charity: The Special Olympics. Starting on July 10th, I will be riding my motorcycle for a continuous 24 hour inside the city limits of Little Rock, AR. I am asking for a pledge per mile traveled. Example: $. 01 x 1000 miles = $10.00 donation

Birthday

Each year for my birthday, I like to take on a fun challenge or plan a big outdoor adventure. This year I have decided to do a 12 hour race called Jackrabbit Jubilee. Since it’s pretty dang hot in Arizona in August, the race runs through the night, starting at 7pm and ending at 7am. You run as much as you can or want to in 12 hours on a short 1/2 mile loop course, stopping as needed to eat or rest. My primary goal is to run at least 34 miles to celebrate 34 years. Once past that distance I will shoot for 40 which would be my longest distance yet. Heck if that feels good we’ll go for 50. This kind of race is a huge challenge for me, I hate repetition. And birthdays are pretty arbitrary, they don’t motivate me that much. So I’ve decided that I’ll do it in support of Special Olympics. Please support me and help me raise $3400 on my 34th birthday. Why Special Olympics? My brother Joe loves sports, playing and watching them. Special Olympics has made it possible for him to be an athlete, experience team sports, and find friends to play basketball, soccer, bowling and more with. Everyone deserves to be an athlete, special olympics makes that possible. Help me support what they do by donating and sharing with friends to help get to $3400.

The Special Olympics has been such a HUGE part of my family for as long as I can remember. From track meets to soccer games, my brother is incredibly competitive and LOVES sports more than anything. Special Olympics gives him the place to shine doing what he loves to do. Every year he looks forward to being on a team (and really loves getting those gold medals!), and the biggest smiles I see on his face are when he's participating in these events. This organization is so much more than medals and sports, it allows us to celebrate those who are different and make them feel valued for who they are. Please consider donating to this amazing cause so we can continue to create an inclusive world where people aren't shunned because of their disabilities, but are instead seen as beacons of hope.

Hello everybody! My name is Marc, I was born and raised in Cologne, Germany and am very thrilled to announce that this summer, I will embark on the most ambitious athletic endeavor of my life. I will ride down by bicycle the whole 3900 km/2400 miles of Route 66, from the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Pacific Coast in Los Angeles. My journey will take me through the green forests and pastures of the Midwest, the unsparing deserts of the Southwest and all the vibrant, culturally enriched cities along the way. I am dedicating my athletic efforts to Special Olympics, a highly respected non-profit organization that empowers people with Intellectual Disabilities through the transformative power and joy of sport. It is active all around the globe, offering opportunities to more than three million athletes on six continents. The donations are used by Special Olympics to finance sport activities for those that are not able to be included or are even actively excluded from regular sport programs. While athletic activities for non-disabled people have a strong stance in society and are available at almost every corner, special needs based sport programs are heavily underrepresented and underfunded. For people with Intellectual Disabilities, sport is a privilege that only few are lucky enough to enjoy, even if it has major therapeutic value. Special Olympics’ programs are the only possibility for many of its athletes to participate in athletic activity and experience the joys and benefits of sports. Specifically, your donation would be used for even more than inclusive sport programs. Special Olympics also provides large-scale health screenings in areas in which people with disabilities have restricted access to healthcare and educates coaches on special needs training in an effort to encourage inclusion beyond its own projects. I therefore sincerely invite you to support Special Olympics’ mission by donating whatever amount you deem appropriate. No matter how seemingly small your contribution might be, it is through a collective effort that we will be able to support equity, inclusion, and equal access to challenge and opportunity. No matter if you choose to make a donation, spread the word about my cause or are simply cheering me on along on my journey, I am very much thankful for any kind of support. Let’s embark on this journey together and let’s make it one worth remembering! William (Billy) Fierstein, Sean Greenspan, and Jason Heyn Our three man team of childhood friends will be attempting the 4 State Challenge Hike. Our goal is to hike 44 miles of the Appalachian Trail over the course of 24 hours. We will begin our hike on December 29, 2020 at Pen Mar County Park in Pennsylvania, moving through Maryland, West Virginia, and finishing at the Weverton Cliffs parking lot in Virginia on December 30, 2020. We want to partner with the Special Olympics to raise money as we attempt this feat. The three of us are lifelong athletes who grew up playing recreational and team sports. Being an athlete and part of teams has taught us invaluable lessons such as the importance of teamwork, goal setting, and determination. As a Special Educator in the public school system, I have seen firsthand how budget cuts and a lack of access to resources for individuals with differing abilities can negatively impact these young adults. Too often these programs are unavailable or too costly for many families and a whole population of people are missing out on the benefits of sports because of it. We believe that the Special Olympics provides a service that has an immeasurable impact on their athletes, families, and friends in the community. Sports bring together a diverse group of people promoting friendships and relationships rarely cultivated in other areas of life. We believe we have an opportunity to highlight the amazing work done by the Special Olympics organization; by pushing ourselves physically, in turn, our friends and family will push themselves to donate to this great cause!
