Hello friends, family, and beloved colleagues! Since I was a kid, I've been obsessed with this extraordinary place. Founded and nurtured by John Lion's passion and consecrated by Sam Shepard's alchemy, Magic has for 53 years put groundbreaking playwrights at the center of everything they do. I've had the privilege of leading Magic for the last twelve of those years and it is not easy to say goodbye: it's such an incredibly special place. Magic is not an Institution; it's an artistic home, a diverse and inclusive gathering place, where ideas are wrestled with, resources are creatively amassed and a miracle occurs: art is made. And every single member of our nimble, tireless family is an intrepid champion of that work. We lead by embracing risk and practicing the art of saying YES to innovating playwrights and ridiculously ambitious plays that are forging the new. In doing that, this tiny little theater, hanging off the San Francisco Bay, has impacted the field exponentially over the last 5 plus decades and I intend for it to continue doing so in style... well into the future! Gathering together in the theater around the stories of our times is essential to our humanity. Please play your part in this tradition--which pushes our conversations, perceptions, and the culture as a whole -- forward by donating generously. We can't do that work without you. And this is the last time I will ask... :) From the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much for this and for all of it. xo Loretta
As many of you know, I am on the board of the San Francisco non-profit, Magic Theatre. They have been helping playwrights incubate plays for over 50 years and many of the productions have moved on to national and global stages including NYC, LA, and more. Additionally, we also run several programs in the Tenderloin for kids from elementary to high school that focus on building confidence, resolving conflict, etc. through public speaking, acting and other drama techniques. I am pledging to raise $25,000 this year; and I could really use your help. This organization means a lot to me and with a global pandemic putting the arts at great risk, we need to support groundbreaking work now more than ever. Any amount you donate will be greatly appreciated! You can make an immediate impact in the theater community as well as the Tenderloin community.
The Magic creates fierce, uncompromising, and truthful art, which can move you in profound ways, move you towards caring about your fellow human beings, caring about the potential we have in our hearts to create a better world. We need the Magic now more than ever before .....
You all know how much there means to me - the Magic Theatre in particular. It embodies everything I love about theatre: Bold, muscular, thought provoking gorgeously envisioned plays that all start with the most important of ingredients - a great script by a gifted playwright. Theatre is critical for a society's survival now more than ever we need new, exciting strong voices. We need the Magic theatre and the theatre needs you! Please consider a generous donation.
Magic is my home and I'm passionate about the theatre that we create and the artists we invest in. At Magic we center playwrights and invest in their vision. I am so proud of the art we make and the integrity with which we work. I've been on staff there for the past 5 years and involved with the organization since 2006 as a bright eyed literary intern. Having been h in continuous operation for 53 years, Magic is an important Bay Area cultural institution. It would mean a lot to me if you would lend your support and help us reach our goal to make the next 53 years of theatre-making even brighter.
Please considering honoring the visionary Kary Schulman with your support. Known as “San Francisco’s godmother of the arts,” Kary Schulman is an irreplaceable member of the Bay Area artistic community. For 38 years, Kary served as the Director of Grants for the Arts, the municipal funding agency for San Francisco’s arts community, granting over $300 million dollars to hundreds of arts organizations. During her tenure it has gained national recognition for becoming one of the most generous and progressive city arts funders in the United States. Her work has been absolutely key to solidifying San Francisco’s place as a home for thrilling art. Her impact is hard to put into words. From neighborhood celebrations to the San Francisco Opera, Symphony and Ballet, from theatre, dance, music, art, tourism, museums, and more - Kary has supported it all. Her legacy as one of the most important cultural instigators in the history of San Francisco is assured. Through it all, she somehow always finds the time to be in our audience and champion our work. For her unwavering support, endless innovation, and for being loud on our behalf, Magic Theatre and the entire arts community are lucky to have Kary Schulman.

I've been with Magic for just over a year now and I am consistently stunned by the work that is created in this place. Our small, incredibly hard working team hustles right alongside the artists and that special, intimate, supportive and familial environment is on a level entirely different than anywhere else I've ever worked. The art here is always 100%. We're in such an uncertain time right now in regards to when we will be able to gather together again and we need support to ensure we'll be able to get back to it as soon as possible. And in the mean time we'll continue to support artists and writers in this new normal for now. Magic Theatre is dedicated to the cultivation of bold new plays, playwrights, and audiences – and to producing explosive, entertaining, and ideologically robust plays that reflect the rich diversity of the world in which we live. Magic believes that demonstrating faith in a writer’s vision by providing a safe yet rigorous artistic home allows writers to thrive.

Magic was my first artistic home out of college. I started there as an Artistic Direction Apprentice and am now the Manager of Individual Giving. Because of Magic, I have had amazing opportunities to work with phenomenal playwrights and directors and have been able to hone my skills as an artist. My work at Magic has led me to move into many leadership positions in theater companies across the Bay, and I would not be where I am without them. I have put my entire soul into making this Gala. Please consider supporting the theater that has not only given me my first stepping stones in the artistic community, but also a theater that I believe in. A theater that was the FIRST to focus new works in the Bay, that supports new voices, new stories, and puts bold and risky work at the forefront.
The Magic Theatre is all about amplifying the talent of brilliant and diverse playwrights and theatrical artists. Watching a Magic Theatre play gives me the same thrill Shakespeare’s contemporaries felt when seeing one of his new works for the first time. There is no other theatre in the Bay Area that does more to cultivate these kinds of artists or to educate the community. We provide a top quality artistic home for talent from all cultural, ethnic, and gender backgrounds. This is why I love The Magic so! The Magic Theatre is a place of discovery and transformation. For the past 53 years, Magic has led the field both locally and nationally in the development and production of bold and substantive new plays, helping develop the artists and audiences that create, seek out, and support the new American canon that represents the country as it is today and as it could be tomorrow.

Please flock to support the Magic Theatre, San Francisco’s home for necessary new plays! The Magic Theatre is the oldest theatre in the world that embraces the playwright from gestation to full production and will do it again for only the best playwrights till they achieve the career they deserve. We do important, vital work that makes you think. That makes you talk till you get home and then dream about it. Because it is relevant and because it starts with a beautiful play. We need your help to continue to do this vital work. Especially in the current state of the theatrical world, which has been hit harder than most environments by the pandemic. It is important that we survive because it is critical that the plays we gestate get out into the world as most of our plays have. The plays you see at the Magic will be the plays the rest of the world sees over the next 5 years and the playwrights that will win countless of accolades including Tony's, Pulitzers and MacArthur Genius Awards.
