Read This Program

I am helping out UAFS team "Read This" in their fundraising efforts. Reading is very important to me, and I appreciate all this team does for the community. I have participated in many of their projects...reading the assigned award winning books, attending discussion groups, as well as the author events where the books' authors are flown in to speak! This is the group that brought us Temple Grandin and so many other notable authors! This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 ( UAFS mascot Numa’s birthday). Hello, Lion Lovers far and wide! I want you to travel back into time for a moment and reflect upon your very first job. My first gig at the tender age of 16, I was hired to bag groceries at Harps. I wore a pressed shirt, tie, and a blue apron while helping seniors like TV queen, Ms. Polly Crews, to lug huge sacks of potatoes (among other items) to the busy parking lot. Wow...the times sure have changed! How was your first day of work? You may have been a little apprehensive about walking in that very first time. Now, imagine being a college student on a fixed income and coming to the realization you have absolutely nothing suitable to wear to the first day at your dream job. This is a reality for several students here at UAFS from hard working mothers, to international students, athletes, or aspiring artists. I am asking for help to ensure every student on campus is 'Day 1' ready by making a monetary donation to assist with the UAFS Professional Clothing Closet during this year's Day of Giving campaign, which is slated to be held on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). If you are unable to donate this year then I would appreciate your assistance with helping to spread the word about this extremely important initiative. Thanks for the support of your UAFS Lions! Olan

Read This Program

Read This is a program that greatly enhances student learning at UAFS. Through the efforts of Read This, world famous authors have traveled to Fort Smith to speak to our students. Additionally, these authors give a talk that the entire community can attend. This allows everyone the opportunity to hear best selling authors, including Amy Tan, David Grann, Luis Alberto Urrea, Emily St. John Mandel, Tim O'Brien, and others, discuss their work. In my classes, I see first hand how the Read This program inspires students to write while helping them connect to cultures and experiences different from their own. Please consider supporting this program so that Read This can continue its outreach to UAFS students and the River Valley community.

Cub Camp

As the Director of Cub Camp here at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, I have the privilege of working alongside some of the most creative and talented students in the Fort Smith area. Cub Camp is only the beginning of a long list of Lion traditions here at UAFS, and with your support, we will be able to sponsor Campers that may not be able to afford this expense otherwise. Cub Camp is a necessity to the development of a college student and will provide for some life changing social development and relationship building skills.

When we started adding textbooks to our collection, it was a game-changer for students. Textbooks are one area in college life where costs can be really prohibitive for students. Boreham Library cares passionately about student success, and that can start with something as simple as making sure students have access to textbooks. That's where you come in. We offer textbooks for gen ed courses already, but with your contribution, we can increase our offerings to make as many textbooks available as funds permit and make students' lives that much easier. We're excited about this opportunity to contribute further to student success, and we hope you'll join us in enhancing the success of the Textbook Share Project!

Cub Camp

Cub Camp supports students' transition from high school to college, which has an impact on their retention and academic success. Additionally, Cub Camp has a proven track record of successfully growing student leaders. We know that students who face financial barriers have a lot to overcome to be successful in college. Cub Camp could be the beginning of a support network that will help them succeed. To that end, we are creating a financial need-based scholarship program to help first-year students cover the cost of Cub Camp. We want to ensure that everyone can experience Cub Camp This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Study Abroad

Studying abroad is a life-changing experience for our students, personally and academically. Help them get there by contributing to this merit-based scholarship. About our Scholarship These funds will cover a full merit scholarship for a UAFS undergraduate to study abroad in Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP), Mexico. Recognized by M.I.T. as a member of EdNET and affiliated with the Harvard School of Business, this university is a center for innovation and the study of language and culture. UPAEP is located in the beautiful and temperate city of Puebla, in central Mexico, rich in history and culture. The Battle of Puebla, for example, celebrated in the United States as the fiesta of “Cinco de Mayo,” took place here May 5, 1862. In addition to a rigorous academic program of Spanish and Latin American history, this study-abroad opportunity gives students 24-hour immersion in Mexican culture and language, as they are housed with carefully selected Mexican families. Students acquire cultural competency as well as Spanish fluency as they explore the ruins of Teotihuacán and Monte Albán, travel to Oaxaca and Mexico City with their cohort, and discover pre-Columbian traditions still practiced in the town of Cuetzalan. The $5,000 scholarship covers the following: roundtrip airfare, tuition, room and board, and professionally guided field trips including hotel and fees. “UAFS prepares students to succeed in an ever-changing global world. This scholarship opens doors for students who would otherwise be unable to take advantage of an opportunity to explore the rich and wonderful world outside of US borders.” -Dr. Mary A Sobhani, head of the World Langauges Department Student Testimonials “I was impressed by the coexistence of so many cultures and ethnicities. My time in the university inspired me to expand my knowledge of the world and helped me understand the depth of how entwined we are as a society on a global scale.” –Jordan Pomeroy, 2018 Study Abroad Graduate "It didn’t last long enough. It really was hard to go home (I cried the whole plane ride home.) You should start a program where the students ‘accidentally’ disappear for a year or two." —Rachel Smith Jordan, 2007 Study Abroad Graduate "I felt safe the entire time I was in Mexico. Safety was the primary concern for my family when I first considered going on this trip. After being there a month, I have to say that safety was not an issue for me whatsoever. As long as you are smart, such as, not going downtown at 3 a.m., just as you would not do here in Fort Smith, etc., there is nothing to worry about." –Stephanie Waack (Longley) 2010 Study Abroad Participant "The excursions were grand. The best ones to “Las Estacas” (a natural park) and the Folkloric Ballet of Mexico. The others were also impressive, like the one to Teotihuacan and the Frida Kahlo Museum." –Isaac Navarro, 2010 Study Abroad Participant. Connect with Study Abroad on Facebook!

CBI Scholarship

The College of Business and Industry (CBI) at UAFS is creating an outright scholarship fund to assist high-performing students. These funds will be used to specifically assist sophomore, junior, and senior-level students that have established outstanding academic performance records and still require financial assistance covering their tuition expenses. The College of Business and Industry graduates more than 300 students each academic year. These students fill technical and professional positions in our region that are identified as being knowledge-intense positions. These particular positions are extremely difficult for our industry partners to fill. Therefore, assisting these students with their tuition and academic rigor directly assists our region in being strategically competitive. Please consider becoming an ambassador for our cause and donating to impact our students’ experiences. Thank you for helping our hard working students as making our region's industry more competitive.

Hola, estudiantes y amigos! This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Our Day of Giving is an opportunity for projects and departments on campus to create unique experiences for our students that couldn’t happen without the support of our alumni and friends. The department of World Languages is sponsoring a $5000 scholarship for a summer program at the University of Puebla, Mexico.(airfare, travel expenses, tuition and room and board with a Mexican family). This would be a life-changing experience for a deserving UAFS student and their fluency in the language would increase 100$. Please consider donating to this very worth cause. My experience in High School to Saltillo, Mexico had such an impact on my listening comprehension and fluency, that I was a winner of the National Spanish Exam and was rewarded with a full four-year scholarship to college. Later on, I spent two years abroad in Madrid, Spain, studying the Spanish language and culture while living with a family there. I even joined a band and traveled throughout the country, singing at major universities. In the summer I bought a one month train pass and joined a group and traveled to France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland ,Germany and Denmark. The award that I won in Spanish was instrumental in my acceptance in a graduate school that specialized in the study of foreign languages. I would want every single student here to have the opportunity of studying abroad because knowing another language is as enriching as living another life! Sincerely, Gray Langston

Jumpstart Scholarship

Over the last three years, I’ve had the privilege to serve as the UAFS Jumpstart Coordinator. I’ve seen these youbg ladies balance work, full course loads, 300 hours of service to the community, and supporting their families with grace and diligence. Help us show our appreciation for their service by donating to the fund. Any size gift is greatly appreciated! This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Our Day of Giving is an opportunity for projects and departments on campus to create unique experiences for our students that couldn’t happen without the support of our alumni and friends. Your gift will provide matching scholarships to our Jumpstart national service members who dedicate their time to serving those most in need in our community, our children! About our Project Jumpstart Arkansas is our AmeriCorps national service program on campus. Our members are college students who serve under-resourced children in local preschools. Members commit to serve 300 hours during a school year to help the children they serve increase their language, literacy, and social-emotional skills while forming trusting relationships with caring adults. Jumpstart is working toward the day when every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed! Our members are a diverse group of college students from a variety of majors who are dedicated to bettering our community through early childhood education. Members serve an average of 10-15 hours per week during the school year without receiving an hourly wage. In addition to their service, several members work multiple jobs while taking a full-time course load. Most also plan to pursue careers in service sectors. Upon completion of 300 hours of service, members receive a $1,342 scholarship from AmeriCorps. We would like to match that amount on our campus for as many members as possible. Let's demonstrate that service is valued on our campus and in our community by assisting these individuals with finishing college with less of a financial burden. Not only will the project assist this group of students, but the matching scholarships will allow UAFS to become recognized nationally as an AmeriCorps School of National Service, potentially bringing more service-minded students to our campus. "Through the AmeriCorps Jumpstart Grant, students who complete 300 hours of service are eligible for a $1,342 Segal Educational Award. We are proud of this opportunity that can be provided to students. However, the chance to increase this award for members who struggle financially yet still choose to serve their community through working with our youngest learners thrills me. Students serving their communities while attending the university deserve the highest assistance we can provide. This project would allow students to be retained at the university and complete a bachelor’s degree without a heavy financial burden upon graduation. Join us in making college more affordable for our national service members!” -Dr. Monica Riley, Executive Director of the School of Education and Jumpstart Campus Champion Did you know? Awarded over $33,000 in Segal Educational Awards from AmeriCorps since 2020 25 members have successfully completed their full 300 hour term of service since 2020 Our members major in education, dental hygiene, nursing, criminal justice, social work, and international business. Volleyball

Help UAFS Volleyball team get to Alaska! About our Project UAFS Volleyball has the opportunity to play in a preseason tournament in Alaska next September. We are using this trip as a team bonding experience to create team cohesion so every player and staff will attend. Players and staff will spend two days playing in the tournament and one day exploring the surrounding areas together. The funds raised will be used to help with the cost of flights and hotels for the volleyball team and staff. We have 25 players and staff that will travel. The cost of this trip is approximately $35,000 so any funds raised would greatly help our efforts for planning this trip. Funding this project would allow our players a once in a lifetime opportunity to play the sport they love and discover the unique culture, landscape, and wildlife that Alaska has to offer. Preseason trips are important in that they create team bonds that set the tone for the season and for the girls to be successful together. Long after their volleyball careers are over at UAFS, the players will remember the wonderful memories they share together from experiences like these. Perspective "My name is Maddie Stojanovic (Gilliam), a Fort Smith native, and my college career began in the Fall of 2014 as a UA Fort Smith Lady Lion Volleyball Player. I believe the UAFS volleyball program, Coach Sargent, and my experiences as a colligate athlete continue to play an instrumental role in my preparedness for life and my identity outside of being a retired volleyball player. Transitioning out of a collegiate athletic career isn’t an easy feat, especially since many athletes spend most of their lives devoting their focus and heart into a sport that inevitably comes to an end. If you would have asked me what’s most important while on the team, I most likely would have responded with answers along the lines of my hitting percentages, my quality of passes, actually “holding” my platform while on serve receive... But looking back, I know my most valuable take aways from my time as a UAFS volleyball player are the memories and relationships that I’ve shared along the way. I have been blessed to travel extensively both professionally and personally in the last several years (5 continents, 15 countries) and have found that each time I return home, having interacted with the world around me and humans in it, I have deepened my understanding of how alike people truly are, regardless of the language they speak or the dinner on their table at night (If they have any that is). Perspective cannot be taught, given, or bought, but I strongly believe that this world would be a better place if we all had ceased an opportunity to gain it. Please let this serve as my outstanding “Thank you” to all those donors of the UAFS volleyball team before me and as I had called it home. Because of you and your confidence in the program, lives have been enriched and opportunities have been given. If you find yourself with the flexibility to financially contribute to the upcoming season of the UA Fort Smith Lady Lions, without reservation, I ask that you consider doing so as it had both literally and figuratively opened my world. F. Scott Fitzgerald said it best, “It’s a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes, everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what’s changed is you.'" -Maddie Stojanovic, Class of 2018, former UAFS Volleyball Player Follow UAFS Volleyball on Instagram!

Read This Program

When I was in school, I was not an avid reader. Now, I always have a book going and read all different genres. This has made me interested in bringing the joy of reading to others. As part of this interest, I have joined the Read This program at UAFS and am an ambassador for this year's Day of Giving. The Read This program has brought several guest speakers to the campus in conjunction with reading one of their books. These books often touch on a social topic such as autism, Holocaust survivors, and murder of indigenous peoples for their oil rights. We have had Eva Kor, Amy Tan, Temple Grandin, and, just this year, David Grann. These speakers help to bring the topic to life and to provide insight into their methods to help future writers. These programs are not only open to students, faculty, and staff of the university, but also to the community. To have a program like this and to bring in speakers takes money. Speakers can charge anywhere from $15,000 and up. Please help this program by donating to our program. This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Our Day of Giving is an opportunity for projects and departments on campus to create unique experiences for our students that couldn’t happen without the support of our alumni and friends. Thank you so much for your support for our students! Success is just not just because of one person, but because of a team. It is because of you that we are able to be successful!

Cub Camp

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is full of students who chase after their goals, and staff who want to see and help their students reach those goals. The funds raised for Day of Giving help UAFS continue to support these students both inside and outside of the classroom to ensure that they are able to maximize the unique experiences this university has to offer, and encourage potential and growth as leaders. Cub Camp is just one of the amazing opportunities through UAFS to grow in leadership as both a group and individuals. Cub Camp is a three day extended orientation designed to help incoming freshmen acclimate to college life. It is a chance to create friendships and an amazing connection to the community that is UAFS. The more access that students can get to the program, the better off the future of our university is.

Please join me in helping support one of the many wonderful UAFS projects on this Day of Giving. I’ve chosen to be an ambassador for our new esports team, the Digital Lions but there are many excellent programs from which to choose. Each plays an important role in helping our students and strengthening our community. Thank you for taking action and supporting our Lions!

My time at University of Arkansas--Fort Smith was the best time of my life. I met amazing people and professors who still mean so much to me. The least I can do is give back and be an ambassador. Help me give back to the school that impacted my life. Between now and April 28th, please consider donating and don't forget to wish the mascot, Numa, a happy birthday as well on the 28th. ---- This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 ( UAFS mascot Numa’s birthday).
