Hello, During the UAFS Day of Giving, Thursday, April 28th, I and many others are asking for your support for programs which encourage cooperation with our community, engaging students with the world, and helping them to reach their academic and personal goals. Specifically, Read This! has provided many unique opportunities on our campus and in the area to bring authors and their works to more people. Read This! encourages people to read, discuss, investigate, and share literature. Read This! and other departmental initiatives at UAFS have brought national and international authors in fiction and nonfiction to our area such as Tim O'Brien, Eva Korr, Billy Collins, Temple Grandin, Chris O'Dell, Amy Tan, M. Scott Momaday, David Grann, and many more. Students, faculty, and the general community have benefitted from in-depth lectures, workshops, and activities with these authors and about their work through the support of people like you. Your contributions are much appreciated and we encourage all to continue to support financially and with your input and attendance that promote opportunities for UAFS students and the community. Kevin L. Jones, Ph.D. Professor of English

Hello, My name is Jessica Whitekiller and I am a senior Vocal Performance major with a minor in Theatre. I have been a student worker at the Boreham Library for four years and have loved every second of it. The library has become one of my favorite areas to be while studying at UAFS. Whether I am working at the front desk, studying for a test, or writing a paper, the quiet atmosphere is perfect for getting work done. In the last four years I've worked here, one thing that I have seen again and again is the use of our textbooks by students. With our textbook sharing program, we are able to purchase textbooks for classes that students can check out and use to help with papers or classwork. This is important because not only does it help promote study habits, it also allows students who cannot afford all of the required textbooks to participate and sign up for classes that will help push them towards their goals. This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Our Day of Giving is an opportunity for projects and departments on campus to create unique experiences for our students that couldn’t happen without the support of our alumni and friends. If you are able to donate, please help us to keep this opportunity available for future UAFS students.

Help support UAFS's new eSports program! The UAFS Digital Lions eSports Program is a budding initiative in student retention, built around the promising development of esports teams across colleges and universities. Funding this project not only aids student retention and recruitment, but it helps to support a program that benefits students involved in a multitude of ways: fostering teamwork, building interpersonal and group communication, time management, organization, and problem-solving skills, as well as physical and mental benefits such as enhancing hand-eye coordination, attention spans, and visual processing. About our Program We are an inclusive organization that strives to offer a fun community for gamers who range from casual to competitive. We focus on games available for competitive eSports based on the demands and requests from students such as League of Legends, Valorant, Smash Bros, and Pokemon. We are always looking for new and interested students to show their skills and express their interest. Thus, if we don’t play a game you may be competitive in let us know and get involved so we can look into adding you and your team to the program! Funds will be used in several ways, first and foremost to purchase personalized uniforms for students who make one of the four planned eSports teams within the program. Beyond that, we will use funds to supplement equipment needs, pay for tournament registration and travel, and supplies for our eSports lab. eSports are a billion-dollar competitive video gaming industry, with tournaments/matches that take place on the local, national, and global scale. Public and private universities across the country have recognized the potential of this new collegiate sport and UAFS intends to be the first in our area. Additional funding will help us grow and support the program so that we are able to offer better scholarships and support for the students on our teams. We also have additional recruiting and retention power with the program, as we have already piqued the interest of local college-bound high school students involved with their respective school eSports teams. Stay Connected eSports! For more information, email UAFSeSports@uafs.edu

From first being a camper, to being a counselor, to serving on D-Staff, Cub Camp has made an ongoing impact on my time here at UAFS. Because of Cub Camp, I had a friend to walk to class with on the first day of my freshman year. Because of Cub Camp, I got to meet so many awesome incoming freshmen last year who have since become my friends, and some even my sisters. Because of Cub Camp, I have grown into the leader and person I am today. I believe in Cub Camp, and want every student possible to be able to experience all that it has to offer!

This year for Day of Giving the Career Services office is excited to have a Day of Giving Project. When I started working in Career Services, the Career Clothing Closet was and still is something that I loved about our department. However, it is in need of a remodel, be reorganized, and newer items brought in. The Career Clothing Closet is located in the 51st Annex at UAFS and is meant for students who need professional attire to be able to pick something out free of charge and they are able to keep the items. UAFS students want to put their best forward and by being able to go to the closet and find professional attire for a job interview, internship, job, or event is one way they can do that. This year’s Day of Giving will take place on Thursday, April 28 (our beloved mascot Numa’s birthday). Our Day of Giving is an opportunity for projects and departments on campus to create unique experiences for our students that couldn’t happen without the support of our alumni and friends. If you are unable to donate this year then I would love your assistance with helping spread the word about this need on campus. Thank you for your support and for loving the UAFS Lions! Stephany

Hello! Kalena Her is my name. I am a sophomore at UAFS. I am a first-generation college student majoring in Workforce Leadership. At Lincoln Childcare Center, we are contributing 300 hours to the 3-4-year-olds' classroom, where we are assisting children with social-emotional skills, reading, and language. At the end of the year, I'll receive a $1,342 scholarship to help me continue my study. JumpStart aims is to help early children in underprivileged communities achieve equal learning outcomes. We're seeking to raise funds for those who will be serving with JumpStart next school year! Those who can donate for the matching scholarships would be much appreciated. Hello everyone, I am Kaitlyn Corsiglia! I am a Sophomore majoring in elementary education. I serve at Lincoln Childcare Center in the four year old classroom, and after I serve 300 hours, I will receive a $1342 scholarship. I chose to serve in Jumpstart to help me interact with children and be in a classroom setting. I would appreciate any size donation that would assist me in receiving a matching scholarship from UAFS! Your gift will provide matching scholarships to our Jumpstart national service members who dedicate their time to serving those most in need in our community, our children! About our Project Jumpstart Arkansas is our AmeriCorps national service program on campus. Our members are college students who serve under-resourced children in local preschools. Members commit to serve 300 hours during a school year to help the children they serve increase their language, literacy, and social-emotional skills while forming trusting relationships with caring adults. Jumpstart is working toward the day when every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed! Our members are a diverse group of college students from a variety of majors who are dedicated to bettering our community through early childhood education. Members serve an average of 10-15 hours per week during the school year without receiving an hourly wage. In addition to their service, several members work multiple jobs while taking a full-time course load. Most also plan to pursue careers in service sectors. Upon completion of 300 hours of service, members receive a $1,342 scholarship from AmeriCorps. We would like to match that amount on our campus for as many members as possible. Let's demonstrate that service is valued on our campus and in our community by assisting these individuals with finishing college with less of a financial burden. Not only will the project assist this group of students, but the matching scholarships will allow UAFS to become recognized nationally as an AmeriCorps School of National Service, potentially bringing more service-minded students to our campus. "Through the AmeriCorps Jumpstart Grant, students who complete 300 hours of service are eligible for a $1,342 Segal Educational Award. We are proud of this opportunity that can be provided to students. However, the chance to increase this award for members who struggle financially yet still choose to serve their community through working with our youngest learners thrills me. Students serving their communities while attending the university deserve the highest assistance we can provide. This project would allow students to be retained at the university and complete a bachelor’s degree without a heavy financial burden upon graduation. Join us in making college more affordable for our national service members!” -Dr. Monica Riley, Executive Director of the School of Education and Jumpstart Campus Champion Did you know? Awarded over $33,000 in Segal Educational Awards from AmeriCorps since 2020 25 members have successfully completed their full 300 hour term of service since 2020 Our members major in education, dental hygiene, nursing, criminal justice, social work, and international business. For more information about our program, please visit our website! Follow UAFS Jumpstart on Social!
