Derrick’s 3rd Annual Run to END EPILEPSY October 9th 8am-2pm Mohawk Hudson River Marathon Albany, NY 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with Epilepsy Join Derrick Rumenapp and his family to raise awareness, donations, and support for the Annual Walk to END EPILEPSY. Derrick has been an advocate for epilepsy awareness since 2009 when his son Matthew was diagnosed and has seen firsthand the fear and pain this seizure disorder can cause. Miraculously, Matthew has made a full recovery with the grace of God and the support of the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern NY. Therefore, to honor the 1 in 26 that will be diagnosed with epilepsy, Derrick is running 26.2 miles as a participant in the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon on October 9th. LORENZO GETS TO KICK OFF AND LEAD THE WALK THIS YEAR!We are so proud of Lorenzo, as the Epilepsy Foundation of NENY 2022 winning kid. Please help us achieve our fundraising goal and if you are free, join our team and walk with us!We hope that sharing our story will show how you can be successful with invisible disabilities with love and support. We would also hope that it shows families in Fulton/Montgomery Counties that support from the Epilepsy Foundation of NENY is here. We want kids and families to know that people near and far are advocating to find a cure. Lorenzo doesn’t need this award to know how proud we are of him. Everyday we tell him he is smart, brave, and kind, and he can do it. He can do anything. When he is older, I will tell him of all the challenges he conquered, from the eye patch to the epilepsy to the constant struggling with side effects. I will tell him he will forever be the bravest boy I have and will ever know. I will tell him he went from fighting for his eyesight to reading like a champ and seeing things we didn’t ever think he would, and that he battled seizures and years of trial and error with medication and side effects. I will tell him not only did he conquer these challenges, but he came out on the other side a kind, smart, and fearless person. For these reasons, Lorenzo will forever and always be our magnificent, winning kid. It has been a long road for our family as together we learned to cope with and understand our path. We continue to be grateful for our village- our family, medical team (especially Dr. Richard Simmons), and friends. Teachers, counselors, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are the base of a strong foundation that helps us learn about these invisible diseases and overcome the seemingly insurmountable challenges that accompany them. We also thank the Epilepsy foundation of NENY, and are grateful for your service in Fulton County. Walk t-shirts may be purchased during online registration.Piper was born Sept. 5 2008. When Piper was 7 weeks old, she was admitted to the PICU at Albany Medical Center Hospital. At 8 weeks old, she was diagnosed with epilepsy. We had no idea she was having seizures. It looked as if she had a nervous tick in her hands and mouth. Her diagnoses were chromosome 22Q11 duplication and infantile spasms. As she grew, her seizures changed to generalized tonic-clonic seizure and sometimes we would see atonic seizures. Piper’s seizure medications changed multiple times over the course of her life. In the process of learning about epilepsy, we also came to the realization that Piper had developmental delays. Piper was non-verbal and non-mobile. She was unable to communicate if she felt a seizure coming, if she remembers the seizure or how she felt after a seizure. We learned through verbal babbling, facial expressions, and body movements. Sometimes she would come out of a seizure (postictal state) as if nothing happened. Other times, she would cry for a few minutes. Piper’s seizures would last anywhere from 10 seconds to 90 seconds. This may not seem like a long time, but to a parent/ caregiver, time seems to slow down. We would try to make eye contact and keep a happy face during the seizures and postictal state. It may seem odd, to keep a happy face, but Piper could read facial expressions and knew the tone of our voices. If we were “happy” she didn’t seem to get as upset. Through the course of her life, we seemed to be making progress with Piper’s seizure control. Her seizures seemed to occur less frequently and were less intense. Her neurologist even suggested trying to reduce her medications.In mid-December 2015, we got a phone call informing us, that Piper had been nominated to be the Child Representative for a telethon in January of 2016. Tragically, on January 17, 2016, just 2 weeks before the telethon, Piper passed away. We continue to share in her story in hope of raising awareness about Epilepsy. 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy.
