Hello Dear Ones, Fourteen years ago, I participated in my very first Swim A Mile. But that wasn’t the first time I WENT to the Swim. In 2007, I accompanied my sweetheart, Tamara, who was swimming her mile to raise money for the Women’s Cancer Resource Center. I was her cheerleader. She was the first person who told me about, introduced me to, and was a role model for me --- to join as a swimmer myself, three years later in October 2010. Since then, we've been there, together, every year. This year, I’m swimming in Tamara's honor. She was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in October 2022. She finished radiation in January, and is adjusting to life on Arimidex, to reduce the chance of re-occurrence. She’s doing well as she continues to live life after a cancer diagnosis. While I wish there was no need for anyone to Swim A Mile – I’m grateful to be able to participate again this year, with Tamara. It truly is an honor. I hope you’ll support me in my Swim this year. You can make a donation on this page, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 With sincere appreciation, Liz

Dear Friends and Family, It is once again time for the Women’s Cancer Resource Center’s (WCRC) annual fundraiser. Swim A Mile raises funds that allow WCRC to continue to offer FREE services and support to women as they navigate their personal care related to cancer. I will be participating in the Swim A Mile on May 6th, and I hope you will be able contribute with a donation. Since 2002, generous friends and family have helped me raise over $69,000! This goes a long way in allowing WCRC to continue their FREE services which include psychotherapy, support groups, art and wellness classes, community-based patient navigation, and information, as well as referral to community resources. Every year I carry the love and memories of so many friends and family with me during the swim. As in 2021 & 2022, I will swim this year in honor of two strong and positive women: My aunt Linda McGrath, and my friend and swim teammate Susan Fuentes. Both of these women continue to face everyday with strength and a smile, as they work to “exterminate” and “live with” cancer. I am inspired and awed by their strength and positivity. •Aunt Linda, who has had multiple surgeries and intensive recuperations for appendiceal carcinoma, continues to do her best every day to deal with whatever comes her way. Unfortunately, of late, Aunt Linda is having more bad moments than good. Fortunately, she is able to enjoy quality time visiting with her adult children and beloved teen grandsons. Her highlight of this past year was enjoying a family trip in October to visit her grandson during his first year of college while celebrating her 75th birthday. Woo Hoo! Here’s to the good times. •Susan was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer five years ago. After surgery and four separate treatments, she happily shares these joyous words, “What a difference a year makes!” Her good news is that she’s had 3 clean scans and things are looking good. Her next scan is in May. Her fingers are crossed and many friends and family send love and positivity her way. Please join me in celebrating these strong women, along with others in your lives. My personal fundraising goal for 2023 is $4,000. I’d like to have all online donations completed and checks collected by Friday, April 28th. Thank you for your support. You can find more information about WCRC at wcrc.org. All donations are tax deductible. Sincerely, -Kelly McGrath

Jenny and the Jets

Spring is in the air, so it's time to Swim a Mile for Women with Cancer! This is my 12th swim for WCRC, and for the first time, I will be swimming as part of a team—Jenny and the Jets! If you want to join us as a swimmer or a mover, please do! The Swim A Mile/Move A Mile for Women with Cancer is a fun and inspiring annual fundraiser that benefits the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Since 1986, WCRC has provided programs and a network of supportive services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. Its mission is to improve equitable access to cancer information, support and care. All of its services are FREE and funded entirely by charitable giving. My first swim for WCRC was many years ago, long before I knew I would ever face cancer myself (but with my sister in mind). Now that I’ve been through it twice—the challenges of chemo and radiation in 2007 for anal cancer and two surgeries and more radiation in 2015 for breast cancer—I have a far greater understanding and appreciation of the work that WCRC does in helping women with cancer every day. I swim because I know how fortunate I was. The people who took care of me in 2007, and again in 2015—the doctors, nurses, technicians, counselors, work colleagues, friends, and family—made all the difference in the world to me. I want other women who face cancer to have all the support they need. And that is exactly what the Women's Cancer Resource Center provides! You can donate here or send a check with my name in the memo to: The Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705Thanks in advance for your generous donation. Dear Friends, On May 7th, 2023, I will be participating for the 6th time in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer, and I hope you'll make a contribution in support of my participation! The Swim A Mile /Move A Mile for Women with Cancer is a fun and inspiring annual fundraiser that benefits the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Since 1986, WCRC has provided programs and a network of supportive services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. Its mission is to improve equitable access to cancer information, support and care. All of its services are FREE and funded entirely by charitable giving. Why is this cause so important to me? The answer is both professional and personal. Many of you know that my day job is focused on expanding access to ultra-sensitive residual disease monitoring technology for blood cancer patients. In my work I am inspired every day by the courage and tenacity of the patients I meet, and also angry when I observe that not every patient gets the best care available. And like many of you, cancer has touched my life personally too: Two years ago, I lost one of my closest friends from college to colon cancer. I have been swimming in her memory ever since. My goal in supporting WCRC is to increase the number of women with cancer who have access to the clinical, emotional and financial support and resources that everyone deserves. Your donation will help WCRC improve the quality of life of women with cancer in the Bay Area by continuing to provide 100% free services including psychotherapy, support groups, patient navigation, financial support, community resources and referrals, and art and wellness classes. Through its focus on serving low-income individuals, people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community, WCRC increases equitable access to healthcare for thousands of people in the Bay Area every year. You can make a donation on this page, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 Thank you so much for helping me support this important cause!

Dear Friends, This spring, I will again be participating in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer, and I hope you'll make a contribution in support of my participation! The Swim is happening on the Weekend of May 6/7. Even though I am swimming on May 7, I will be volunteering on May 6, so I will post the cards for everyone you want me to remember - Survivors, Fighters, and Remembrance. I will send you pictures of your own honorees as well as the ribbons of cards that I put on the wall. As many of you know, I make the yearly swim in honor of my daughter, Meighan Maguire, who survived Hodgkin's Lymphoma and has gone on to raise two fabulous men - Jager and Alden Metz - in addition to earning her PhD., building a fabulous career and engaging in major community volunteer work. I also honor my big brother, Bill Holmes, who died of cancer in 2017; he helped make this possible by teaching me to swim when I was six years old! Sadly, earlier this year, I lost my dear friend Judi Johnson, who died of pancreatic cancer, but who will be looking down on the Swim with her lovely smile! Better news is that another dear friend is continuing her good fight against Lung Cancer - her name will also be on the Honor Wall; current advances in treatment have helped her maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. My friend, Ed Murphy, is fighting prostate cancer but for the moment, Ed's doctor is using the term 'cure' for him, so our fingers are crossed. Others of you have asked me to post honors for other fighters as well, including Julie's mom Angela, Jenny's Aunt Dee, and Michael's mom Kaye, who is a multiple fighter and survivor. I continue to honor several friends who are cancer survivors - Joan Goldenberg, Kathryn Conway, Mareva Godfrey, Sandra Mitchell, and Sue Cooper. I also honor other survivors who are very dear to our family - long-time friends Mikki Aaronoff and Dottie Yeoman, , and JoAnn Gordon and Lorraine Fraysse, our French cousins. Ed's friends Karl and Katie are also survivors. And this year I am lucky to add Ron Edwall's sister Bev Walden as a survivor! Sadly in 2017, we also lost Edith Byron (Alex's mom) and had to add her to the list of several others who did not make it - including my grandfather Poppy (Gilbert Couly), Tante Jeanette Couly, Great Uncle Marius Fraysse, Melissa's good friend Rory Gaynor Berk, Alex's Aunt Phyliss, Dori's mother Lucile Robbins, Dave's stepmom Anne Wiley and his aunt Sally Wiley, who was also a former Lair tailgater, Ed Murphy's friend Rosemary, and Sandy's friends John and Tina Discon. In 2019 we lost Jim Appel, Mark's Dad, and Doug Best, our Lair Tailgate 'Souper Chef". In 2020 we lost another long-time tailgater to cancer, Craig Wiley, who is now reunited with his beloved Sally; we also lost one of the original Lair group campers when Joan Isola died. Our friend Steve's mom, Babette Vaught, passed in 2011 of ovarian cancer. Today I learned of my friend Jim Flavell's brother Michael's death from melanoma more than 30 years ago - his name will be on the Honor Wall this year. Nikki also lost a good friend last month, Stephen Will, Assistant Scout Master and Wente Camp Leader, who will be honored this year as well as Tillie Short, Loras Ojeda's mom who died earlier this year. If I missed anyone or if you have anyone else you would like me to honor, please let me know - whether or not you make a contribution. Dear Friends, This spring, I will be participating in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer, and I hope you'll contribute to supporting my participation! This will be my third year participating and my first year as a survivor. I was diagnosed and treated for Melanoma in 2021. Dear Family and Friends, I am thrilled to share that after many years of cheering Carolyn on, this spring, I too will be participating in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for People with Cancer at Mills College, and I hope you'll make a contribution in support of my participation! No amount is too small. I am swimming in honor of my two grandmothers, Margaret and Charlotte, who both had cancer, and all the other people who are currently battling or who have battled this illness. Although I am not confident in my swimming skills, I have been training at my local pool. I recently swam half a mile outside in 43F weather - so I am dedicated and I can make it! This swimming event remains a big challenge for me. Your support means a lot. Dearest family & friends, We have grown out of our teens together! May 6, 2023 will mark my 20th year participating in the Women's Cancer Resource Center's (WCRC) Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer. The majority of those years were swum with your incredibly generous support. This annual event is the most inspiring fundraiser I’ve ever had the honor to witness. One, because of the energy at the actual event – filled with the love, clear commitment, and joy of an entire community of swimmers and their families, volunteers, WCRC staff, pool support staff, and more. Two, because of the direct application of the funds you donate – towards wellness, healing, advocacy, education, and more, for 2000+ people every year. I feel proud to not only be a Swim A Mile participant/supporter, but also a volunteer yoga teacher at the WCRC. The past four years teaching this class have given me greater insight into how the WCRC impressively fulfills its mission. I’ve also developed beautiful relationships with the women who practice ~ they are my heroines. They are also the people whose lives your donations touch in the most tangible ways, and I cannot thank you enough for helping to provide them with the life-changing support they receive from the WCRC. I hope you’ll consider participating again this year to help me raise funds for my favorite organization! You can click to make a donation on this page, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 As I say every year, no amount is too small (or big!)… and if you can’t donate, please do send the name(s) of anyone you’d like to add to my prayer list. It means a lot to carry that list with me to the event, and in my heart as I swim. Thank you for always caring. With tremendous love, Kelly P.S. A local TV station did an interview with the WCRC last fall. It’s a short yet informative, uplifting piece that provides some nice insight into this powerful little organization. Dear Friends, This spring, I will be participating in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer on Saturday May 6th. This year will be a very special swim for me. I was diagnosed with early invasive breast cancer in October 2022. Embracing survivorship, I now stand on the shoulders of so many women whose own journeys with breast cancer has informed the effective treatments that I have been privileged to receive. I hold each and every one of these women in my heart. For this 2023 Swim a Mile, I am swimming in honor of my sweetheart, Liz Larew, and my sister, Alicia Randazzo. Two beautiful and amazing breast cancer survivors whose love and steadfast support is with me each and every day. I am truly blessed. Dear Family & Friends, In May, I will again be participating in the Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer. As the Bitmoji above depicts, each year I show up wearing a red sun hat, a long-sleeved sun shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. Not swimwear, I know! Rather than swimming, I consider the mile-plus that I walk each day at the pool to be my "move a mile!" I ALWAYS enjoy this weekend full of good will, celebrating community coming together to support people with a cancer diagnosis. I hope you'll make a contribution in support of my participation! Your generous contribution will be DOUBLED as part of a match that is going on now.You can make a donation on this page, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 Thanks in advance for your generosity.
