From cleaning cat cages to walking dogs to fostering kittens and taking dogs for shelter breaks, the APS community - both people and animals - has quickly become part of my larger community in Durham. I see how much time, effort, and care this community puts into making sure our local animals are cared for, find good homes, and get everything they need while waiting for that perfect fit.Help me support this community and this effort with a donation towards one of APS's largest fundraisers of the year - their Walk for the Animals. I am more than happy to send you kitten photos when we get our next set of kitten fosters as a thank you <3

Help APS reach our goal of raising $110,000 for the animals with the Walk For The Animals fundraising event! If you follow me in instagram, you will notice that I’m a passionate dog walking volunteer at the Animal Protection Society of Durham (Durham County Animal Shelter). I started volunteering in December 2022, and have been obsessed ever since! There are SO many wonderful dogs that come in - and out!- of that shelter. These pets are so loving and hopeful in finding a place to call home. The passion of the staff and volunteers to endlessly love these animals in their care drives me to keep coming back!Of course, there’s a lot that goes into the care of these animals. Bear began his stay at our house just about 4 years ago as we continued to foster some of APS’s medical dogs. At the time, Bear had heart worms, intestinal worms. severe flea dermatitis with the loss of a lot of his back hair, and a urinary tract infection. At 8 he was the oldest patient in the medical kennels, so when we asked about another foster, he was on the top of the list.He went through the long heartworm treatment with us, the other worms and infection cleared up, and as we treated the dermatitis his hair started to grow back. After three months with us we had started to really bond as a “pack,” so as they cleared the shelter that summer, we knew he wasn’t going back. And that’s our foster fail story. Now Bear enjoys walks around the neighborhood and at the local park, play time with his feline brother, and the occasional trip on I-95 to visit relatives in New York and Florida. Bear is turning 12 this month and enjoying his golden retirement years as he watches the world go by from his vantage point in the foyer or on the front porch, with his only “concern” being which deer he should bark at next…
