I carry a special place in my heart for the people and animals at the APS of Durham. I cannot say that there has been one day in twenty-five years that I have not considered the animals or people at the shelter. They are part of my life and my heart. I need them, and they need me.Asking for anything is really difficult. For me, it is embarrassing and humbling. But I need your help.Every day I have to make life-and-death decisions. It is never easy, but it could be easier without the added pressure of figuring out how to pay for our animals' care. Each year we see thousands of animals. We save everyone (animals) we can, but the need never seems to stop, and the resources needed to care for them continue to climb. So much so that daily, weekly, and hourly, we know that saving lives comes down to financial resources. Do we have the resources to provide for this animal? If we do, we can try. If we don't, we can't. These daily decisions can be heartbreaking. So, although I usually ask for nothing, the animals deserve more from me right now. They deserve a leader who isn't too proud or humble to ask for help. So, can you help them by giving? Thank you!Friend, Leader, Mom, Grandma, and Servant,Shafonda Together we can make a difference! Hazel’s story-Hazel was deeply loved and raised for 18 months by a young woman here in Durham. She is attempting to complete her college education at a local university. Unfortunately, her housing situation would no longer allow her to keep Hazel with her. Heartbroken, frightened, and confused she reached out to APS of Durham for help. She chose to surrender Hazel to our care. I met Hazel in her kennel as soon as she came to the adoption floor and it was love at first site for both of us. She was/is the most affectionate and empathic dog I have ever met. I had recently lost my 14 year old pit-mix, and some how Hazel knew. I took her home for a week-end foster and knew I had to make her mine. She had to return to the shelter for her spay surgery, and taking her back to her kennel was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do. Well, she healed and I took her home on 12/15/21 and learned just how intelligent she is. She new all the basic manners a dog should know, she was house trained, and did I mention empathic? She has grounded me on multiple occasions from nightmares/panic due to first responder PTSD. She herself suffers from Separation Anxiety and struggles to be left home alone. She has a wonderful SA Pro Trainer that helps us overcome her struggles. Hazel gets to visit her original dog mom any time she wants and it’s a joy to see them reunite. I’m sure this dog rescued me, as much, or more than I rescued her. I challenge my family, friends, first responder colleagues, Emergency nurses, etc…to donate anything you can. Any amount helps. Start A Story. Adopt…

We are made up of dedicated aps Volunteers, where we change kitty litter; walk dogs; train dogs; let dogs play in playgroup; foster tiny kittens; bring in peanut butter, hotdogs, treats and more peanut butter!APS is more than a shelter to us. It's a place bursting with heart and hope. It is where dogs come with matted hair; where expectant cat moms come ready to give birth to kittens; where bunnies, birds, hamsters -- you name it-- come for care. It is where the volunteers and staff give their love to creatures of all sizes. It's a beginning for an animal who comes through our doors; the beginning of their transformation and journey to a new, loving home. There are so many ways to make a difference. Reading this email is one of them! Monetary donations are appreciated, but please consider volunteering, adopting, sharing posts or even dropping used towels off. Thanks for taking the time to learn about the shelter that we work so hard and pour our hearts into! It's not about how much anyone gives; it's that if great numbers take the time to give a small amount, it will carry the animals of Durham that much further.

Please support me in the 2023 Walk for the AnimalsThe Animal Protection Society of Durham will hold its 2023 Walk for the Animals on May 27 on Duke University’s East Campus, and I'm participating this year in memory of my dog, Grayson, who we lost to cancer this spring. Our family adopted him from a schnauzer rescue group in 2012, after he was surrendered to a local shelter.APS is Durham's local animal shelter, and the walk helps support programs that ensure humane care for homeless and neglected animals in the area. It takes about $300 to care for an animal during its stay with APS. This includes life-saving vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, parasite prevention and treatment, basic/preventative medical care, food and boarding. Please help support APS and the Walk for the Animals by giving online: https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/2023WALKAPS/CaraBonnettThank you for your support!

From cleaning cat cages to walking dogs to fostering kittens and taking dogs for shelter breaks, the APS community - both people and animals - has quickly become part of my larger community in Durham. I see how much time, effort, and care this community puts into making sure our local animals are cared for, find good homes, and get everything they need while waiting for that perfect fit.Help me support this community and this effort with a donation towards one of APS's largest fundraisers of the year - their Walk for the Animals.
