APS Volun-TEAM

Grab a leash* and help APS reach our goal of raising $110,000 for the animals with the Walk For The Animals fundraising event! I'm the team captain of the Volun-TEAM and we are raising funds for The Walk for the Animals 2023. I have been a volunteer at Aps for over eight years, where I work walking dogs and training other volunteers to walk them, too. Aps is more than a shelter to me. It's a place bursting with heart and hope. It is where dogs come with matted hair; where expectant cat moms come ready to give birth to kittens; where bunnies, birds, hamsters -- you name it-- come for care. It is where the volunteers and staff give their love to creatures of all sizes. It's a beginning for an animal who comes through our doors; the beginning of their transformation and journey to a new, loving home. I'm very proud to be a member of the Behavior Team. We've studied animal expressions and body language so that we can interact with shy pups at the back of their kennels in a non-threatening way. We also retrain behavior that might prevent an adoption, such as jumping on humans or any number of not-so-endearing traits. Through gentle coaxing, re-direction and positive attention, the Behavior Team works with the hardest to place animals and helps them adapt to the trials of shelter life. There are so many ways to make a difference. Reading this email is one of them! Monetary donations are appreciated, but please consider volunteering, adopting, sharing posts or even dropping used towels by the facility near you. Thanks for taking the time to learn about the shelter that is so near to my heart. It's not about how much anyone gives; it's that if great numbers take the time to give a small amount, it will carry the animals of Durham that much further. Love

The Smith-Brady Pack (Wil & Sarah) is back for a 7th year of FUNdraising for APS of Durham at its annual Walk for the Animals. Both our current dogs, Arya and Ryden, were adopted from APS, and both pups benefitted from not only the care and attention they received from staff and volunteers at the shelter but also the love and patience of the foster program run by APS. We truly appreciate donations of all amounts to support this invaluable animal shelter that serves the county we call home. Some additional details directly from APS: It takes on average $300 to care for an animal during their stay with the APS of Durham. This includes life-saving vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, parasite prevention and treatment, basic/preventative medical care, food, board, socialization and love. In addition to a robust pet adoption program, we facilitate low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for owned pets, host a Pet Pantry for people needing temporary support to keep their pets in their homes, and attend to medical emergencies for stray pets injured while away from home and the care of their owners. We are Durham’s Community Shelter.

MANY of you know how passionate I am about animal rights and that I spend most early mornings volunteering at my local animal shelter. Not only do the animals rely on volunteers for daily walks and socialization, these future family pets rely on monetary donations for just about everything—from life saving surgery to dog biscuits, donors save the lives of these animals so that they can find their forever families. Please donate if you can, and I encourage you to volunteer at your local shelter. There are so many ways you can make an impact. Together we can make a difference! Help me reach the fundraising goal for the APS! They are the only community organization in Durham NC that takes in and cares for all animals who come through their door. I’ve been volunteering here since 2017 and every year they improve on the last. They can only keep improving with our support! The dog in the pic with me is Gamora. She was able to get knee surgery through the generous donations given to the APS. She rehabbed at my house until she was able to be eligible for adoption. The APS stuck with her. Your donation will save animals from our community who are cared for by the staff and volunteers at the APS. I am raising $1,000 for APS of Durham, the Durham County Animal Shelter this May. APS of Durham is an important pillar of the Durham Community. They care for all local animals and provide a safe haven for lost animals and strays. In 2022, APS of Durham reunited over 500 animals with their families and cared for almost 5,000 animals. They accomplished this with the love and labor of a fantastic staff and dedicated volunteers. Some important goals for the shelter include providing spay/neuter services to the community and increasing community education. These services will help families afford to keep their family pets and make adding a pet to their family accessible. What can your donation pay for? $300 pays for the care of an animal$160 pays for basic medical care of an animal$130 feed every animal in the shelter for one day$70 pays to spay/neuter an animal$30 pays for a microchipAny donation helps us care for our community's homeless or neglected animals as we work to find them their forever home. My personal story with APS is one that many folks have heard. I started volunteering, fell in love with and adopted Penny, started fostering, and now I'm a "regular" volunteer, and the shelter is my second home. It is a gift to help care for the shelter animals and work alongside the staff and volunteers. But the animal shelter is old and outdated, animal surrenders are up, and adoptions are down. Durham's beautiful cats, dogs, and other miscellaneous creatures need your help. Please donate and share this fundraiser to help me raise $1,000!

Bear began his stay at our house just about 4 years ago as we continued to foster some of APS’s medical dogs. At the time, Bear had heart worms, intestinal worms. severe flea dermatitis with the loss of a lot of his back hair, and a urinary tract infection. At 8 he was the oldest patient in the medical kennels, so when we asked about another foster, he was on the top of the list.He went through the long heartworm treatment with us, the other worms and infection cleared up, and as we treated the dermatitis his hair started to grow back. After three months with us we had started to really bond as a “pack,” so as they cleared the shelter that summer, we knew he wasn’t going back. And that’s our foster fail story. Now Bear enjoys walks around the neighborhood and at the local park, play time with his feline brother, and the occasional trip on I-95 to visit relatives in New York and Florida. Bear is turning 12 this month and enjoying his golden retirement years as he watches the world go by from his vantage point in the foyer or on the front porch, with his only “concern” being which deer he should bark at next…
