Dear family, friends, sorors & colleagues, I pray this message finds you well. I am very well; however, 40% of my neighbors in Buffalo and Erie County are not well. They are part of the ALICE population (i.e., asset limited, income constrained, employed). Today is our United Way Day of Caring. I joined 2,000 volunteers, performing a wide variety of services, to help meet the needs of our ALICE neighbors, and help us all heal from our multiple, 2022 tragedies (i.e., the racially motivated 5/14 massacre at a Tops supermarket, and historic, life-killing winter storms). We work with youth and young parents to assist with housing, budgeting, shopping, cooking, life skills, provide counseling services. We operate four housing programs in Buffalo. In Erie County, there are nearly 5,000 children and youth living in foster care and out-of-home placement programs. We work hard to ensure when they leave our program they're ready to be self-sufficient, responsible, and secure in their choices.
