Marilyn’s Legacy Marilyn arrived at Suffolk in 1982 to lead an interdisciplinary major in the Communications & Journalism Department. Her leadership led to the growth of faculty and staff and course offerings and productions, and she was appointed as the founding chair of Suffolk’s Theatre Department in 1999. Since then, Marilyn has directed over 50 plays, musicals, staged readings and public recitals for the department. Her dedication to the craft and her students has been unwavering. Her impact on the Suffolk community cannot be overstated. Marilyn has achieved many great things in advancing philanthropy at Suffolk, including helping secure significant gift commitments leading to the renovation of five major theatre spaces on campus. She co-founded and led the Creativity and Innovation course requirement—a first-year, shared, multi-disciplinary, general education initiative—and paved the way for the creation of 55 new courses in over 23 departments. Marilyn’s Continued Impact in Theatre Many of you have been affected directly by Marilyn’s teaching and mentoring, have acted in or worked on her productions, and still feel her influence on your lives. In honoring Marilyn and her remarkable legacy at Suffolk, the Marilyn Plotkins Fund will provide current and future undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need and are majoring in Theatre, an opportunity to pursue experiential learning opportunities. This award will open doors for students facing economic hardship, allowing them to gain hands-on experience through workshops, apprenticeships, independent research, and internships. What a fitting legacy this will be for Marilyn and the department she founded.
