Dear Friends, 30 years ago, I was part-time Office Manager for a little nonprofit in Berkeley, the Women’s Cancer Resource Center. I had an idea for a fundraising event and created the Swim A Mile for Women With Cancer event. This year, the Swim A Mile event celebrates its 30th anniversary, May 11th and 12th. I will be participating this year, not as the event’s Creator and Coordinator, but as one of its swimmers raising pledges (with your help!) to support my beloved old friend, the Women’s Cancer Resource Center. The Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer is a fun and inspiring annual fundraiser that benefits the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Since 1986, WCRC has provided programs and a network of supportive services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. Its mission is to improve equitable access to cancer information, support and care. All of its services are FREE and funded entirely by charitable giving. You can make a donation on this page, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 Thanks in advance for your generous donation. It will directly support more than 2,000 people over the next year!

Dear Friends, On Mother's Day, I will be participating in my final Swim A Mile / Move A Mile for Women with Cancer. and I hope you'll make a contribution in support of my participation! As all of you know, I make the yearly swim in honor of my daughter, Meighan Maguire, who survived Hodgkin's Lymphoma and has gone on to raise two fabulous boys - Jager and Alden Metz - in addition to earning her PhD., building a fabulous career and engaging in major volunteer efforts. One of the best things about the event is the Honor Wall, that allows us to recognize family, friends, and others who have survived cancer, are currently fighting cancer, or who have been lost. If there is anyone you would like me to add to the Wall, whether or not you make a donation, please let me know. This year my dear friend is continuing her good fight against Lung Cancer - her name will also be on the Honor Wall; current advances in treatment have helped her maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. And just recently, I learned of another good friend who is fighting Chronic Leukemia. Now my friend Ed Murphy is also fighting cancer, hopefully to be cured by next year. Others of you have asked me to post honors for other fighters as well, including Julie's mom Angela, Jenny's Aunt Dee, and Michael's mom Kaye, who is a multiple fighter and survivor. I continue to honor several friends who are cancer survivors - Joan Goldenberg, Kathryn Conway, Mareva Godfrey, Sandra Mitchell, and Sue Cooper. I also honor other survivors who are very dear to our family - long-time friend Mikki Aaronoff, JoAnn Gordon and Lorraine Fraysse, our French cousins. Ed's friends Karl and Katie are also survivors. And this year I am lucky to add Ron Edwall's sister Bev Walden as a survivor! Sadly in 2017, we lost my big brother Bill Holmes and Edith Byron (Alex's mom) and had to add them to the list of several others who did not make it - including my Tante Jeanette Couly, Melissa's good friend Rory Gaynor Berk, Alex's Aunt Phyliss, Dori's mother Lucile Robbins, Dave's stepmom Anne Wiley and his aunt Sally Wiley, who was also a former Lair tailgater, Ed Murphy's friend Rosemary, and Sandy's friends John and Tina Discon. In 2019 we lost Jim Appel, Mark's Dad, and Doug Best, our Lair Tailgate 'Souper Chef". In 2020 we lost another long-time tailgater to cancer, Craig Wiley, who is now reunited with his beloved Sally; we also lost one of the original Lair group campers when Joan Isola died. Our friend Steve's mom, Babette Vaught, passed in 2011 of ovarian cancer. Last year my dear friend Bob Merkle lost his significant other, Dottie Yeoman. And just last weekend, we lost our nephew Bob to esophageal cancer. The Swim A Mile /Move A Mile for Women with Cancer is a fun and inspiring annual fundraiser that benefits the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. Since 1986, WCRC has provided programs and a network of supportive services for women with cancer in the Bay Area. Its mission is to improve equitable access to cancer information, support and care. Thanks for being here. This Mother's Day, I'll be doing one of my favorite things: swimming. But even better - swimming for a cause. I'm swimming to raise money for the Women's Cancer Resource Center in the Bay Area. I'm swimming for my grandma who beat breast cancer years ago. I'm swimming for my beloved friend's mother, 'Merica, who danced with breast cancer for 9 years but didn't beat it last Spring. I'm swimming because I can, because my laps in the pool can help to support women battling cancer today. While I swim, you can help to support these women too. No donation is too small - and any amount is greatly appreciated. Thank you for joining in the fight against cancer, and finding your way to participate too.

It's that time again! Dearest family & friends, We have come of age this year! May 11, 2024 will mark my 21st year participating in the Women's Cancer Resource Center’s (WCRC) Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer. Many of you have been swimming beside me with your donations for every single one of these 21 years… others I’ve only just met during the last two decades, and your ongoing support has been consistently loving and inspirational. Above and beyond that, your generous donations have helped the WCRC grow substantially since my first Swim A Mile. With 13 full time staff and a network of 200+ active volunteers, they now serve ~2,000 women with cancer and their loved ones. And they do it amazingly well. From caring intake of new clients to programs in art, yoga, meditation, cooking, and more; to specialized support groups; to one-on-one advocacy in navigating the healthcare system; to education for cancer prevention; to support throughout treatment, survivorship, hospice, or celebrating cancer-free diagnoses… the women in this organization truly provide unique, critical support and resources for the clients of WCRC. Some of you may know that 2024 also marks 40 years since my mom died of breast cancer. I wish there’d been an organization like this from which she could have benefited. Granted, she had many, many friends and family members surrounding her with love and support – but the WCRC would have been the one place where she didn’t have to explain what it was like for her to wrestle with the Beast. They would have understood her experience completely and she’d have found a home there… just as I witness so many women finding a home, and each other, at the WCRC. I hope you’ll consider participating again this year to help me raise funds for my favorite organization. No amount is too small (or big!). You can click to make a donation HERE, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 Also… please remember to send along the name(s) of anyone you’d like to add to my prayer list! Whether you donate or not, this is an important part of the swim for me and many others. Healing thoughts, good vibes, strong prayers – whatever your beliefs are – have a very real and crucial impact on those who need it most. Let’s toast 21 together and make it one of the best years yet! Thank you for always, always caring. With tremendous love, Kelly P.S. In October 2022, a local TV station did an interview with the WCRC. It’s a short yet informative, uplifting piece that provides some loving insight into this powerful little organization. Dear Friends and Family, Swim A Mile is rapidly approaching! This will be my 23rd year to participate in this annual fundraiser for Women’s Cancer Resource Center (WCRC). Swim A Mile raises funds that allow WCRC to provide FREE services and supports to women as they navigate their personal care related to cancer. I will be swimming on May 11th, and I hope you will be able to contribute with a donation. Since 2002, generous friends and family have helped me raise close to $70,000! That’s a lot of support for so many people. WCRC’s supports include psychotherapy, support groups, art and wellness classes, community-based patient navigation information, referrals to community resources, and so much more. Every year I carry the love for, and memories of, so many friends and family members with me during the swim. My father, Richard McGrath, and Jamie’s parents, Ross and Marvel Sherrill, are always with me. During this year’s swim, I will also hold three strong women in my heart - gathering power and strength to send their way: My friend and swim teammate, Susan Fuentes; My aunt, Linda McGrath; and my mother’s neighbor and dear friend, Nancy Shaw. These women are facing their challenges every day with grace and positivity. Their goals ranges from OBLITERATING CANCER, living with cancer, moments and days without pain, and simply enjoying their rich lives. Please join me in celebrating these strong women, along with others in your lives. My personal fundraising goal for 2024 is $5,000. (Help me blast past that goal!!) I’d like to have all online donations completed and checks collected by Friday May 10th. You can make a donation on this page, drop a check to me/ask me to pick it up, or send a check with my name in the memo to: Women's Cancer Resource Center2908 Ellsworth StBerkeley, CA 94705 Thanks in advance for your generous donation. You can find more information about WCRC at wcrc.org. All donations are tax deductible. With gratitude, -Kelly McGrath
