Participating in the Unity Campaign is helping Frederick community members learn more about the ways Frederick Community College (FCC) is helping the ALICE households improve their opportunities for themselves and their families. Education offers a way out of the endless financial struggles, increased job satisfaction, better pay with benefits, and opportunities so a family can thrive.

Returning to school helps students who are parents create better futures for their families.

Parents Lead is an access, retention, and completion program at FCC that provides assistance to parents in the pursuit of a college degree. It targets students like Ashley Chambers who may have thought completing a college degree was not possible. Ashley received a Parents Lead scholarship in 2021.

“Without Parents Lead I feel like I wouldn’t have been able to finish completely,” said Ashley. “To know that I’m part of a program with other people that are in the same boat really pushed me here. Doing it alone would have just been so hard.”

Parents Lead offers financial support to offset the cost of childcare while parents attend classes or study. The program provides students with a carefully planned set of courses that are designed around the experiences and needs of working parents while teaching them the academic and advocacy skills needed for long-term success, all in a supportive learning community, with routine and highly supportive advising. Project outcomes include 1) students completing their associate degree in the discipline of their choice, and 2) students entering the workforce or transferring to a bachelor's degree program where appropriate.
