Putting the Second Chance ACT into ACTION

Many of you, like me and my colleagues at Campbell Law, are looking for ways to bring positive change to our community after the devastating death of George Floyd.  We wish to “do good, seek justice, and correct oppression.”  Isaiah 30:18.

Our Blanchard Community Law Clinic has worked for four years to help citizens move forward with their lives following incarceration and involvement with the criminal justice system.  We do this primarily through criminal record expunctions.

Over 80% of our clients are African Americans impacted by the criminal courts.  All of our clients are low income.  Criminal record expunctions bring immediate, positive change to the lives of those impacted by the justice system.

The North Caroline General Assembly, moved to action by Mr. Floyd’s death, recently passed with unanimous bipartisan support the Second Chance Act.  This legislation significantly improves the ability of citizens to remove old criminal convictions from their records so that they can find good jobs and support their families.

The clinic is perfectly positioned to begin processing newly eligible expunction petitions, but we need your help. Specifically, we need $100,000 to hire staff support for a two year period to process what is expected to be a voluminous number of petitions and also to review the files of all former clients who may now be eligible under the new law.

You can help us today by making a gift to our clinic and re-posting and re-tweeting this message and encouraging others to give. Together, we can accomplish this goal and improve the lives of thousands of justice-involved individuals in North Carolina.
