Let's Dance for a Cure: Square Dance

$0 Total Raised

My name is Kathy Harger. I am working with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation to raise money for research in hopes of finding a cure for cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).

For me, this is a deeply personal venture. I have cholangiocarcinoma but am grateful to have no evidence of disease at this time. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation’s mission is to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by this disease. Cholangiocarcinoma is an aggressive lethal cancer that occurs in the bile ducts of the liver. Approximately 10,000 Americans are diagnosed annually, and the diagnosis rate continues to rise. Many young adults are being diagnosed with this disease at alarming rates. Sadly, survival rates are low due to late detection, with many being diagnosed at stage 4.  I feel compelled to bring awareness of this type of cancer to my community and am looking forward to dancing for a cure!

My story:

I was not sick at the time of my diagnosis in October 2021. I just retired in September of 2021 as an RN with 40 years of Nursing experience. I had some GI issues 18 months earlier, and I had a GI workup for GI reflux. A lung nodule was noted on my CT scan but nothing else of particular concern.  As a follow-up, it was recommended I have a repeat CT scan one year later. At this time, COVID came about, and I just plain forgot about the follow-up CT. I went to see my primary care doctor for another reason in October of 2021, and she asked me if I was going to do that repeat CT. I decided to move ahead with it, and that is how we found my tumor. Fortunately, the earlier detected lung nodule was stable. I do credit my doctor for her encouragement. Without it, my tumor may have gone undetected.  At the end of October 2021, I was diagnosed with Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma. I could not believe I had cancer. By all accounts, I was a healthy 62-year-old woman with no chronic conditions. I was the picture of health.

I received care at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/Fred Hutchinson in Seattle. I had Chemotherapy at Fred Hutchinson starting December 2021 to May 2022. I lost a lot of my hair but did fairly well with the treatments.  Ultimately my tumor shrank enough to have surgery for removal in June of 2022 at the University of Washington. After my tumor was removed, I completed 4 rounds of chemotherapy. Since then, I have been taking oral medication to help prevent tumor growth with my type of gene mutation. I’ve experienced so many ups and downs during this process. The mentors at the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation as well as the support groups through the Foundation, helped me be more knowledgeable and feel supported during this entire journey. I don’t know how I would have gone through my treatments without them. I have been reminded of the grim diagnosis of this cancer. I choose to stay positive and do what I can in the meantime to find a cure for this deadly cancer. I am closely monitored with scans every three months. I enjoy my life and spend time with my family and friends. I try and focus on the positive and give back where I can. That is why I am doing a fundraising event for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. (CCF).

My goal in hosting this event is to honor those with this disease, bring awareness to our community, and raise crucial funds for CCF through an evening of fun.
