In loving memory of Dean John F. Stack, Jr.
    July 8, 1950 - June 23, 2022

It is with profound sadness that our Founding Dean of our Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Dr. John F. Stack Jr., passed away the morning of June 23 following a long battle with cancer.  Those of you who had the privilege to know and work with John understand what a loss this is for our university, community and humanity.  John dedicated his entire academic career and his professional life to our FIU:  as one of the faculty who has been at FIU since the mid 1970s, John helped to build the institution from the ground up, develop the curriculum at all levels, carry out path breaking research, build new programs, including the globally recognized Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, teach thousands of students, and influence a generation of scholarship with his groundbreaking work on ethnicity and transnational relations.  John exercised judicious and caring leadership in administrative roles leading the Department of Political Science, the Jack D. Gordon Institute, the Ethnic studies program, the Model United Nations, and the Green School.  He represented FIU before the University Press of Florida for two decades, and was a senior adviser and friend to department chairs, deans, provosts and university presidents.  Throughout John maintained his passion for teaching and mentoring students.  He was most proud of the countless young minds who depended on John’s sagacity and professionalism to guide them to their next milestones—graduate studies, law school or into impactful public and private sector work.

The John F. Stack, Jr. First Generation Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in honor of Dean Stack to help First Generation students in SIPA. This scholarship was funded by his friends and and colleagues to keep Dr. Stack's legacy and memory alive in perpetuity for our hard working students.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the John F. Stack, Jr. First Generation Scholarship Endowment Fund.
