USC VHH Emergency Department

A Critical Resource for the Community

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital’s (USC VHH) Emergency Department (ED) is staffed by physicians who are faculty at the Keck School of Medicine at USC and a dedicated team of nurses who have been nationally recognized for exceptional emergency care. USC VHH’s ED combines one of the shortest wait times in the area with high quality, comprehensive and compassionate care. This excellence is achieved through a commitment to continually improve and enhance the resources available to patients through on-going training of clinicians, the acquisition of cutting-edge medical equipment and technology, and modernized facilities.

    Expert Pediatric Care

As a certified Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP), our physicians, nurses and staff understand that providing emergency services for children requires a specialized, unique approach. Because of philanthropic support, all USC VHH ED nurses receive specialized pediatric emergency nursing training and certification.

    Ongoing Clinical Training

As a result of access to philanthropically supported, specialized training for nurses, USC VHH is the recipient of the prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association which recognizes emergency departments throughout the country that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) Center

Over the course of their lives, one in six women report being sexually assaulted. Unfortunately, those who report their assault are often forced to relive the trauma several times over as they provide statements to police, hospital personnel, advocates, etc. They may endure waiting in a busy emergency room and may experience a healthcare worker who lacks training and experience working with victims of sexual assault. USC VHH’s Emergency Department seeks to provide specialized training for staff and develop collaborative, interagency partnerships in the establishment of a SART Center.

    Innovative Medical Equipment

As a certified primary stroke center, our emergency staff has the knowledge, resources and tools to provide immediate care for stroke patients. Innovative medical equipment, such as gurneys with scales, allow weight-based blood-clot busting medication to be safely, accurately, and swiftly delivered to stroke patients presenting in our ED. The purchase of these gurneys is just one example of how cutting-edge technology is made possible by charitable contributions from our community of supporters.

    A Welcoming Environment

“Be the best part of someone’s worst day,” is the mantra of USC VHH’s ED. People are in pain and frightened when they visit. Especially our youngest patients. Comfortable and inviting waiting rooms, re-configured and streamlined treatment rooms, teddy bears for kids… these improvements and amenities all serve to make a daunting experience feel just a bit more personal and pleasant. Recent ED renovations were made possible by generous major donor contributions. These named gifts offer a sustainable source of funding and are critical to our hospital’s ability to remain a place where people are not only receiving the best medical attention, but somewhere they feel comfortable and safe.

Built in the 1990’s, our ED has 12 treatment bays for what was then a projected volume of up to 12,000 patients annually. At present, USC VHH’s ED is treating approximately 26,000 patients each year – 116% more than it was designed to. Improvements, renovations and work-flow efficiencies have helped to somewhat mitigate the space pressure created by increased patient volume, but ultimately the footprint of the space has not changed in nearly 30 years, necessitating patient treatment in privacy screened hallways, gurneys, chairs, cubicles etc. during peak times. Ultimately, an expansion project, with increased square footage and 35 treatment bays, will need to be undertaken to meet the emergent healthcare needs of the community while maintaining short wait times and excellent clinical care.

    Make an Impact

At USC VHH our mission is to provide personalized, high-quality healthcare relevant to our community.  Philanthropic funds support clinical training, equipment purchase and capital improvements in our Emergency Department.
