Just over 20 years ago, my family learned why my brother had started stumbling, tripping and losing his balance with increasing frequency when he was diagnosed with Ataxia. We knew nothing of the disease or what it would mean for his life. It was scary, and no one had answers for him.

A decade later, my sister had the same symptoms - loss of balance; falling frequently; stumbling like she had been drinking. We knew the diagnosis was coming; it was just a matter of my sister acknowledging what had become apparent.

It turns out my siblings have a unique form of a unique disease. There is no treatment; there is no cure. Of my parents' four children, two have Ataxia. It seems to be their own unique form - a recessive form that shouldn't be passed on to the next generation. That is a relief, as my sister is the mother of three beautiful children.

Both my siblings stopped working several years ago. They face challenges every day because of their balance and other issues. My brother doesn't drive, but he can build an arcade system starting with a Raspberry pi mini-computer. My sister can't run with her kids, but she can bake cookies and cakes and the best cheesecake in the world.

My siblings can't ride a bike anymore. But I can. And, this year, I am going to participate in the Ride Across Indiana on July 20. As I ride 160 miles from Terre Haute to Richmond, I will do it for them and for all the others who live with Ataxia every single day.

My goal is to raise $1,000 for the National Ataxia Foundation, an organization that brings awareness to the disease and funds research. Some day, maybe they'll find a cure or at least a treatment. Please help me help my brother and sister by donating whatever you can. No gift is too small.

Thank you!
