University of Arkansas - Fort Smith
Read This! is a community-wide literacy program that aims to select thoughtful books and provide programming about diverse communities around us and bring to light important social issues that foster discussion and mutual understanding.
The “Read This!” program is about more than simply reading a book. The big read extends beyond the UAFS campus, welcoming learners from around the community to dig into understanding diverse populations to become more informed and enlightened citizens. The program builds upon reading the selected novel over the course of two years with experiential learning, author talks, expert guest lectures, and more.
Funding the “Read This!” program builds upon the foundation laid in 2009, to enhance learning and dive deeper into the meaning of a novel. It provides a way for the program to bring authors to students and the community to hear, first-hand what they meant, what they envisioned, and what the message they hoped to deliver was.
“’Read This!’ is not just a program for people who love to read, but for people who love to learn. … It helps us cross boundaries that are usually parallel from one another and rarely meet.” – Dr. Ann-Gee Lee
