Celebrating and remembering the life of Gavin Short
Gavin Short was a 2020 Eagle Scout from Troop 671 chartered to Wildwood Park District. Gavin began his Scouting journey in 2008 as a Tiger Cub in Pack 671. In 2013, he crossed over to Troop 671 and his adventures really began. Gavin loved Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan and from age 6 he never missed a summer, except for a trip to Sea Base. His Eagle Scout service project revitalized a park in the Heather Ridge Subdivision of Gurnee, re-creating a nature trail and creating a patio space complete with benches and a Little Free Library.
Gavin was a student at University of Oklahoma studying meteorology. His career goal was to better understand Mother Nature to help others be prepared. On April 29, 2022, he and two other OU students, Nicholas Nair and Drake Brooks, died in an auto accident.
Gavin's family has selected Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation as how to best remember Gavin and the impact this camp had on him and thousands of other Scouts. Gifts to the Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan fund will be used to support annual improvements and new programs at camp.
