Why your gift is needed:
Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska is the only statewide nonprofit exclusively dedicated to brain injury in our state. As such, it strives to enhance the quality of life for the more than 36,000 individuals living with disabilities caused by brain injury, as well as their families.
- Statewide, an estimated 36,000 people live with a disability due to brain injury.
- Three people are hospitalized because of a TBI.
- On average, 13,634 TBI cases are reported annually on the Nebraska Brain Injury Registry.
- In general, total combined rates for traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations and deaths have increased over the past decade.
- Approximately 75% of TBIs that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild traumatic brain injury.
- Brain injury is a health and financial crisis that can drive families into low-income status. Lengthy hospitalization and rehabilitation, low or no insurance and continued medical care, sometimes for life, can put pressure on finances. In cases of permanent disability, often there is a need for a spouse or parent to discontinue work in order to provide continuous care for the person with a brain injury. All of this puts a strain on family economics, which can lead to low-income status.
What your gift will do:
- $35 connects individuals to community resources. With your donation, BIA-NE could create and distribute comprehensive packets for anyone starting their journey toward healing.
- $50 helps support the Brain Injury Annual Conference.
- $100 educates parents, players, and coaches of clubs sport programs about how to properly identify and manage a concussion.
- $500 helps provide resource facilitation for someone with a brain injury.

- Resource and Referral for Brain Injury Survivors: BIA-NE has brain injury resource facilitators providing individualized assistance, resources and referral services for individuals with brain injury and their families.
- Changing the Culture of Concussion: BIA-NE leads the Nebraska Concussion Coalition, which creates statewide concussion recognition and management. Those targeted are coaches, parents, players, teachers and healthcare professionals.
- Responding to the Needs of Domestic Violence Victims: BIA-NE educates community providers about the importance of brain injury recognition and management so they can meet the needs of victims with brain injury due to domestic violence.
- Preventing Abusive Head Trauma (Shaken Baby Syndrome): BIA-NE captured the devastating stories of four children after being shaken as babies in a documentary, Forever Shaken. This powerful 30-minute educational tool is being used by childcare advocates, schools, hospitals, etc. to show the lifelong challenges that face children of Abusive Head Trauma.
- Brain Injury Education and Outreach: An annual statewide conference, a website, monthly e-newsletter and 18 statewide brain injury support groups bring current information to individuals with brain injuries, their families and healthcare professionals.
