Why your gift is needed:
Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder of the motor control areas of the developing brain. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain. There is no cure for cerebral palsy; however, treatments that reduce the symptoms can improve quality of life. United Cerebral Palsy of Nebraska provides education, advocacy, grants and social programs to individuals and their families with cerebral palsy and similar disorders.
- Cerebral Palsy (CP) is caused by damage to a developing brain. CP affects motor skills, coordination, muscle tone, reflexes, posture and balance depending upon where and how the brain is injured.
- About 1 in 323 people are affected by Cerebral Palsy.
- Cerebral Palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood. The prevalence is higher for children born premature or at low birth weight.
- CDC estimates the lifetime cost to care for an individual with Cerebral Palsy is over 1 million dollars.
- There is no cure for CP however, treatments that reduce the symptoms can improve quality of life.
- An estimated 4,500 to 6,500 Nebraskans have Cerebral Palsy.
What your gift will do:
- $25 provides one sensory-stimulating switch to be used with an adapted toy for an individual with special needs in a Tech Tools Developmental Technology Library.
- $50 provides materials and supplies for a toy-adapting workshop to help modify everyday toys for all ages and abilities.
- $100 supports the Caregiver retreat, which provides emotional, physical and mental respite that is essential to a family or professional caregiver.
- $250 pays for a Client Assistance Grant to replace needed batteries in an electric scooter for a person with cerebral palsy to remain mobile and independent.

- Client Assistance Grants: Provided to qualified families and individuals with cerebral palsy and similar disorders to promote independence, encourage empowerment, enhancement of mobility and improve quality of living through support to caregivers and/or improvements to living environments. Grants help with things such as adaptive equipment, assistive technology and home or vehicle modifications.
- Family Focus: is a series of events intended for individuals in the community with special needs and their immediate family members. This program offers activities as well as an opportunity to draw strength and knowledge from others facing similar challenges.
- Go Baby Go: Provides modified, ride-on cars for free to eligible children, approximately 9 months to 6 years, with special needs who experience limited mobility.
- Information and Referral: Information and referral is available for individuals with disabilities, their family, professionals and advocates throughout Nebraska.
- Tech Tools-A Developmental Technology Library: Libraries are located throughout the state and offer a wide variety of adapted toys, equipment and devices to individuals of all ages with developmental delays and physical challenges. The items are available for check-out at no cost four up to one month. The libraries are open to families, professionals and other care providers to increase independence at home, school, work or in the community.
