Agency Name: Nebraska Community Blood Bank

Why your gift is needed:

  • NCBB is one of the nation’s blood banks selected to participate in the federal Operation Warp Speed initiative, offering testing for COVID-19 antibodies in order to identify potential donors of a life-saving specialty blood product called convalescent plasma
  • 1 in 3 people will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime.
  • Only 38% of people are eligible to donate blood, though everyone may someday need it.
  • Every 2 seconds someone needs blood.
  • Blood transfusion is the most common hospitalization procedure in the United States.
  • NCBB recently expanded its life-saving reach and opened a donor center in Omaha.

What your gift will do:

  • A donation of $50 pays for additional testing to precisely match a blood donor for a patient with sickle cell disease.
  • $100 fills the gas tank of a bloodmobile. NCBB bloodmobiles travel to more than 500 blood drives every year.
  • $175 pays for additional testing to precisely match a blood donor for a cancer patient.

Agency Summary:

  • Through effective outreach to donors, continual development of biomedical expertise, and brand-building partnerships, NCBB connects those who need blood with the generous volunteers who give.
  • NCBB hosts blood typing and educational programs throughout the community, including regular Stop the Bleed trainings held in partnership with Bryan Health.
  • NCBB offers PACE-approved continuing education courses to hospital and clinical laboratory staff.
  • Each fall, NCBB conducts a workshop for high school students who coordinate blood drives at their schools and in their communities. Participating high schools are eligible for secondary education scholarships.
  • NCBB maintains an informal speaker's bureau comprised of blood donors, blood recipients, and other community members who share their experiences about the importance of blood donation.
