    In Memoriam

    John Chappell

In remembrance of the extraordinary life of John Chappell, let’s join together to transform a community in Honduras with the gift of clean water. John Wade Chappell was born in Norfolk, VA on February 22, 1939 and grew up in Chesapeake, VA. He earned a B.S. from The University of Virginia in 1961. After graduating, John joined the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Captain. He specialized in investment banking focusing on real estate. John was passionate about helping others and accomplished this through The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem and Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. He gave back to the community he loved by serving as a Commissioner for the Transportation Safety Commission and South Norfolk Revitalization Commission for the City of Chesapeake. John passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019 in his home in Norfolk, VA.

As a memorial to John, you have provided a brand new water system for the community of Santa Elena, Honduras!

    Santa Elena

Santa Elena is a remote community in Western Honduras. For years, the people here had struggled without safe water to drink. Community members suffered from stomach pain, sickness, and other gastrointestinal issues because of bacteria in their water.

But you have changed that! Because of you, a new community water system has been completed, including a 5,000-gallon water storage tank with chlorine purification to disinfect the water and a water faucet for every home in the village! Not only that, you provided training for the locals in how to use and maintain their new equipment.

Ten-year-old Jeslin (pictured above) is one of the many residents of Santa Elena who are so thankful for the blessing you’ve given them.“We have been fetching water since I was very young, since I was four years old,” Jeslin remembers. “After school, I came home to do my homework… and then I had to go fetch water.”

Unfortunately, the water Jeslin had to carry home was not good to drink. “Sometimes when we got to the water source the water was very dirty, but we had no choice but to take it home,” Jeslin says.

This dirty water would make Jeslin and others in Santa Elena sick. “One time I took a drink, but it tasted horrible,” Jeslin recalls. “I drank it and thought, ‘I hate this and I don’t want to drink it again,’ and then I got a strong stomachache. It felt like my stomach was going to explode and I cried from the pain.”

Thanks to YOU, the pain Jeslin felt is now a thing of the past. She no longer has to drink that filthy water because of your generosity!

“I thank God because Operation Blessing gave us the project,”Jeslin exclaims. “I feel so happy! I thank the people who donated to this project because now I am drinking clean water and we are so joyful!”

Thank you for honoring John’s legacy with such an incredible gift for Jeslin and everyone in Santa Elena.
