Maui Kids & Teens Cook with Heart- American Heart Association
The Need
In Hawaii, 1 out of every 4 children are obese by the time they enter kindergarten. Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years as the result of a caloric imbalance, where too few calories are expended for the amount consumed. Obese youth are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease along with other chronic health issues.
To curtail the onset of obesity among children, the American Heart Association developed the Kids Cook with Heart program to teach elementary, middle and high school students how to prepare healthful meals as a way to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Studies show that youth who are involved in preparing their own meals are more likely to eat nutritious foods, and more fruits and vegetables. Moreover, the program gets kids excited about trying new foods, and encourages them to share this passion with their own families at home, thus expanding the program’s reach.
Your Impact
- Your donation of $10 will buy a cutting board for our program.
- Your donation of $25 will buy produce for one class in the program.
- Your donation of $50 will buy mixing bowls and whisks for one class in the program.
- Your donation of $100 will provide the opportunity for one child to participate in the program at no cost to them.
The American Heart Association’s Kids Cook with Heart course is an interactive, educational program designed to improve children’s nutritional choices and diets – as an important part of improved cardiovascular health – by engaging them in healthy cooking classes. Kids Cook with Heart served over 575 kids last year in Maui, Hawaii.
