Maui Kids Cook with Heart Program
The Need
In Hawaii, 1 out of every 4 children are obese by the time they enter kindergarten. Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years as the result of a caloric imbalance, where too few calories are expended for the amount consumed. Obese youth are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease along with other chronic health issues.
To curtail the onset of obesity among children, the American Heart Association developed the Kids Cook with Heart program to teach elementary, middle and high school students how to prepare healthful meals as a way to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Studies show that youth who are involved in preparing their own meals are more likely to eat nutritious foods, and more fruits and vegetables.
Moreover, the program gets kids excited about trying new foods, and encourages them to share this passion with their own families at home, thus expanding the program’s reach.
Your Impact
- Your donation of $10,000 will provide the opportunity for one grade to participate in the program at no cost to them.
- Your donation of $1,000 will provide take-home kits for one class
- Your donation of $100 will provide the opportunity for one child to participate in the program at no cost to them.
The American Heart Association’s Kids Cook with Heart course is an interactive, educational program designed to improve children’s nutritional choices and diets – as an important part of improved cardiovascular health – by engaging them in healthy cooking classes. The goals of the program are to:
- Increase fruit and vegetable consumption
- Decrease sugary drink, and increase water, consumption
- Decrease high sodium processed foods
- Increase cooking healthy foods and snacks at home
