Rebuilding Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan

Since 1929, thousands of Scouts have been introduced to the Magic of Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan through the life-changing experience of camping in the wilderness.  On July 19th, 2019, a macroburst devastated Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation and changed the landscape for years to come.

Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan will be open summer 2020, but for Scouts to experience the Magic of Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan, a lot of work must be done to rebuild camp.  We are grateful for volunteers including the Wilderness Engineering Society and others who are committed to helping us rebuild camp in the most cost-efficient manner possible.

Current estimates are that it will cost approximately $600,000 to rebuild camp, not including the cost to repair the minimal damage to three of our six insured buildings.  These costs include:

    • Infrastructure Repairs and Upgrades (utilities, roads, tree removal, etc.) - $257,000
    • Housing and Campsites (cabins, staff housing, shelters, latrines, tents, cots) - $276,000
    • Program Related Repairs (teaching shelters, zip line, etc.) - $44,000

These figures are estimates and do not include a contingency for unexpected expenses, which are likely to come up in a project of this magnitude.

Through the generous support of donors like you, we have raised a large portion of the funds needed.  We have received an additional funds through the sale of lumber that loggers are removing to restore safety to camp.
