In Memory of Coach Moore
Coach Moore: The name alone instills both admiration and frustration, and definitely without enough space or time to outline all of his life lessons. As the daughter of this lifelong coach, I often remember rolling my eyes at most of his “pontifications”, but now find myself wishing I could hear them again. His dedication to his players extended across youth, high school, and college sports, but most recently, college tennis at Marywood.
He was constantly imparting words of wisdom to his players, sometimes very unsolicited, including to read “The Inner Game of Tennis” or reviewing his own “Doubles Bible” to focus on strategy. Throughout all of it, he reminded us that we had to really want to be better at anything we did, not just sports. My siblings and I were all keenly aware of his similar approach to parenting, including where the lines were and what would happen if we crossed them. It was a daily challenge, but we knew what the standard was because he modeled it daily.
My dad was larger than life in that way and likely a hard one to ever emulate, but certainly an entity to measure ourselves against. I hope we do you proud, Coach Moore, and know you will be watching over us all.
