Richard William “Dick” Arter, 89, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on January 22, 2021 in Sarasota.
Dick was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to William and Lydia (Sasse) Arter, on March 22, 1931. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the Missouri School of Mines in Chemical Engineering, and received his MBA from Washington University in Missouri. Dick served in the 24th Infantry Division of the US Army in Korea.
Dick was employed for his entire career by General Electric in Louisville, KY and Bloomington, IN, holding many managerial positions during his tenure. Being a hard worker and loyal company man did not define Dick. He was a devoted father and husband, spending quality time with his family traveling, being outdoors, and pursuing physical activities such as biking, sailing, camping, and hiking. After retiring to Sarasota he joined local organizations to further his passions of biking and sailing.
Dick is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia (Roth) Arter, and children Patti Hanson and her husband Randy, of St. Cloud, FL; Tom Arter and his wife Missy, of Bedford, IN; Nancy Cobb and her husband Dave, of Longwood, FL.; and grandchildren Kelsey Donegan, Chris Donegan, Tyler Cobb, Ryan Cobb, Sarah Hanson, and Emily “Lee” Hanson. He also is survived by his brother Jerry, and his wife Darlis, of Altamonte Springs, FL. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Margaret (Flamm) Arter.
Dick’s last words at their family Zoom meeting were “I love you all.”
