THE MITCHELL KESSLER SCHOLARSHIP FUND:
Youth Recreational Programs: Another valuable area for public support is recreational programs for young people who would not otherwise be able to participate in Portland’s recreational programs.
- The Mitchell Kessler Scholarship Fund: provides financial assistance to families with children unable to afford programs offered by the Portland Recreation Department. The Fund has a strong focus in the area of teen participation by promoting those interests in which Mitchell both enjoyed and excelled. Mitchell was the proud and beloved son of Carlene and Richard Kessler. He grew up in Old Orchard Beach and Portland. Mitchell was a 2004 graduate of Cheverus High School where he excelled in both academics and sports. He participated in both the basketball and golf programs. Mitchell was selected as captain of the golf team in his senior year. He then continued his education at the University of Southern Maine, graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology. Mitchell loved all sports and started at a young age in Little League and continued on with baseball, basketball, martial arts, and was an avid golfer. Mitchell’s love for life was seen in his generous, funny, charming, and kind spirit. His love of family and friends was the keystone of his life.
While attending USM, Mitchell started working for Portland Recreation as a counselor in the before and after school recreation program at Hall School and summer camps. During this time, Mitchell discovered his love of working with children. With his quirky sense of style and engaging sense of humor, the children and staff truly enjoyed being with Mitchell. These were years of growth and maturity for Mitchell as was evidenced in his commitment to caring for the children in his stead.
The Mitchell A. Kessler Scholarship Fund provides children the opportunity to participate in programs that Mitchell both participated in as a young child and worked in as an adult. Given Mitchell’s enthusiasm for recreation, sports, education, and his zest for life, this Fund honors his passion, spirit and memory.
