Our Vision and Our Work
The USC BKN & PT Black Alumni Association’s overarching vision is to change the landscape for optimal equity and inclusion within the USC Trojan family, the physical therapy profession and the community at large. While Black people account for approximately 13% of the United States population, people who identify as Black make up only 5% of the physical therapy profession. This not only means the likelihood of a black person being evaluated and treated by someone who looks like them is low. It also means the likelihood of someone who is not Black having the patient experience of interacting with and receiving high quality care from a Black physical therapist is extremely low.
To effect real change, our efforts focus on increasing the visibility of Black people in higher education and the healthcare profession and increasing cultural competence in healthcare. We are dedicated to empowering Black rehabilitation professionals in healthcare to overcome racially biased systems and advocate for diversity. We work alongside USC BKN & PT faculty to promote clinical and professional excellence by providing career mentoring and scholarships for current students. In our communities, we work to improve quality of life through advocacy and volunteerism. Join us in uplifting our community and profession!
