United Way of the Eastern Panhandle

The mission of the Brian O'Neill Jr Foundation is to empower individuals and their families to help prevent suicide in youth and young adults.
We provide Sources of Strength Adult Advisor and Peer Leader training in the schools. The Adult Advising training is a 4–6-hour training to prepare the Adults to work with their Peer Leaders in the school to promote an upstream Suicide Prevention program. The Peer Leader Training is a 6-hour training with students with Adult Advisors present.
The trainings include learning about the 8 strengths/protective factors and defining them for themselves to manage high stress and the 3 big emotions of anger, depression, and anxiety. When the training is complete the students meet with Adult Advisors 1-2 times a month. In the meetings it is broken into 3 parts Fun, Share, Plan. There is always a game to get engagement, then sharing how strengths are working for them and planning campaigns in the school to spread the word.
These campaigns provide engagement with the school population for other students to identify strengths, trusted adults, etc. These campaigns also can provide resources to students that are displayed throughout the schools and social media. The goal of the Peer Leaders is not to be mini counselors but agents of change and connectors to help.
We also are working on a community program called "My Village" which will offer workshops that students will be able to choose. The goal of the workshops offered will help build resiliency and give students new tools to lean into to help manage Big Emotions and stress. This program will be offered once a month and each student will be able to choose 3 out of 5 workshops to participate for an hour each. We are working on being able to offer Equine Learning, Dog Therapy, Music Therapy, Art such as acrylic pour, watercolors, zentangle, journaling, and vision boards, Yoga, etc. We are hoping through donations and grants we will be able to start offering this program April 2023.
The dollars raised during the Unity Campaign will serve youth in Berkeley, Morgan and Jefferson counties.
The Unity Campaign is a 15-day fundraiser powered by United Way of the Eastern Panhandle.
During the 15 Days of Giving from March 1 - 15, donors can contribute to any of the participating agencies and 100% of their contribution will go directly to the nonprofit organization of their choice.
