Getting up at 2 in the morning might seem like a hard way to start the day, but when a home fire breaks out, day or night, volunteers on a Red Cross Disaster Action Team or DAT are often some of the first people on the scene.

DAT volunteers are specially trained to assist those affected by local disasters by listening and meeting a family’s immediate needs. This may include providing water, snacks, and hygiene kits which contain basic personal care items. Red Cross volunteers also distribute preloaded cash cards that allow families to reserve a hotel room, purchase meals, and other supplies like clothing or prescriptions if they had to run out with nothing.

Each month, through the generosity of donors, like you, the Red Cross delivers approximately $2,000 in direct financial assistance to your neighbors in Frederick County who are displaced by a fire or natural disaster.

This is just one of the many services the Red Cross provides to the people in Frederick Co. We also work with active duty, retired military and their families. We collect, process and distribute blood products to those who have cancer or who need surgery. We provide skills training like CPR and First Aid.

Whichever way you’ve chosen to give, your time as a blood donor, your talents as a volunteer or your financial gift, thank you.

Mission

The American Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region seeks to fulfill on a regional level the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

We are guided by seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

What We Do

Led by volunteers and financially supported by generous residents, businesses and foundations, we provide the following programs and services:

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education

  • Respond to local disasters, including home fires.
  • Provide disaster education presentations to individuals in the community, educating them on how to prevent, prepare for, and recover from life-threatening emergencies.

Health & Safety Services

  • Teach lifesaving skills in classes throughout the region.

Service to Armed Forces

  • Our Service to the Armed Forces program supports military personnel, veterans and their families on military installations within the region, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and throughout the greater community.

Community Services

  • Participate in community events such as safety fairs, parades and celebrations, and provide community members with health-related and disaster information.

Blood Services

  • The Red Cross provides about 40% of our nation’s blood and blood components, all from generous volunteer donors.

Volunteerism

  • We depend on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry out our work.
  • Volunteers constitute 90 percent of our total workforce.
